Chapter 19 - The Shadow at the GatesThat evening, as Katherine prepared to leave the bank, her security chief intercepted her near the private executive elevators.

"Director Whitfield," the security guard said, holding a heavy manila envelope. "A courier dropped this off at the lobby reception desk five minutes ago. It’s addressed directly to you, marked confidential."

Katherine looked at the envelope. The handwriting on the front was messy, hurried, and scrawled in cheap ballpoint pen. It wasn't corporate stationary.

She took it upstairs to her penthouse apartment, pouring herself a glass of rare red wine before sitting down at her private study desk. With deliberate care, she slit open the envelope and pulled out a single sheet of lined paper.

It was a letter from Chloe Vance, postmarked from the minimum-security federal facility in West Virginia.

Katherine,

I don't expect you to forgive me, and I know I deserve every single day of the three-year sentence I'm serving. But I need you to know the truth about Reginald.

When you froze his accounts, he didn't just panic about losing his company. He had hidden a secondary portfolio under his sister's name in the Bahamas—money he intended to use to abandon both of us the moment the federal net closed in. He never cared about me, Katherine. He never cared about anyone except himself.

I thought I was winning when I stepped into his world. In reality, I was just another line item on a balance sheet he planned to erase.

You destroyed his empire, but you walked away free. I hope you're happy.

— Chloe

Katherine stared at the letter for a long, quiet moment. There was no surge of anger, no bitter triumph, and no lingering resentment.

She simply picked up a pair of stainless steel scissors, sliced the letter into neat, uniform strips, and dropped them into the shredder beside her desk. The machine hummed softly, reducing Chloe's confession to meaningless dust.

Reginald and Chloe had tried to build their lives on deception, manipulation, and the exploitation of others. In the end, their own greed had become the executioner.
