Chapter 2 - Accepting the CrownAt 7:00 AM the next morning, the compliance floor of First Meridian Bank was still quiet, but Katherine was already standing inside Regional Director Paul Hargrove’s glass-walled office.

Hargrove looked up from his espresso, surprised. "Katherine. You're in early. Have you made a decision about the Senior Compliance Lead position?"

"I have," Katherine said, her voice completely devoid of its usual soft, accommodating tone. She wore a sharp, tailored navy suit today—not the sensible gray wool Reginald preferred. "I'll take the promotion, Paul. Effective immediately."

Hargrove smiled, leaning back. "Excellent. I knew Reginald would understand the time commitment. You’ll get the corner office, the raise, and full authorization over the Tier-1 investigation grid."

"I need my clearance upgraded right now," Katherine said smoothly. "I have a time-sensitive anomaly to process."

By 8:30 AM, Katherine was sitting in her new private office. Marcus Bell, her sharp-witted colleague, leaned against the doorframe, holding two coffees.

"Look at you, Madam Director," Marcus grinned. "What's the first order of business?"

"Shut the door, Marcus," Katherine ordered softly.

When it clicked shut, she turned her monitor toward him. "I need you to witness a Tier-1 Asset Freeze. I am invoking the Patriot Act Anti-Money Laundering clause on Bracken Ridge Construction, and its parent entity, Whitfield Development."
