Chapter 12 - Ghosts in the Ledger“My father,” I said, the words tasting like dry ash on my tongue.

“He borrowed startup capital from Kane’s mentor back in the nineties,” Sarah confirmed quietly, watching my reaction with guarded eyes. “When your father tried to pull out and clean up the shipping lines, he had a fatal ‘accident’ on his yacht. Kane inherited the debt, and he’s been waiting twenty years for the right moment to reclaim his stake in the Chicago waterfront—using you as his primary asset.”

The fortress walls I had built around myself didn't feel like protection anymore. They felt like a cage constructed on a foundation of blood I hadn't spilled, but had inherited all the same.

“Does Claire know?” I asked, my voice dangerously low.

“She compiled the files, Adrian. She knew everything,” Sarah said, standing up and heading for the door. “Which is why she was hiding in your house. She didn't pick your door by accident. She knew whose bloodline owned the key to the vault.”

I stared down at the flash drive on the desk. The silence of the mansion suddenly felt deafening, heavy with secrets that refused to stay buried in the past.

Before I could process the weight of the revelation, the study door flew open. Daniel rushed in, his tablet glowing with an urgent amber alert.

“Boss, we’ve got a massive security breach on the outer perimeter sensors,” Daniel panted, his eyes wide. “Not from the lake, and not from the main road. The federal transport convoy carrying Victor Kane to the county facility... it never arrived.”
