Chapter 7 - The blackout Siege“Power cut,” Daniel’s voice hissed over the encrypted comms, broken up by heavy static interference. “EMP pulse or a direct substation hit. All internal grid systems are down. We’re on backup generators, but someone’s jamming our frequency!”

“Get Lily and Claire into the reinforced safe room beneath my study,” I ordered, drawing my weapon again as I drew myself up in the dark foyer. “Sarah, stay behind me. Don't move an inch.”

“I’m carrying a Glock, Moretti, I don't need a babysitter,” she muttered, clicking the safety off with a sharp metallic snap.

Outside the massive mahogany front doors, the sound of heavy boots crunched against the gravel driveway. Not one or two pairs—dozens. The dull, rhythmic thrum of chopper blades began to vibrate through the stained-glass windows overhead, casting strobing sweeps of white light across the walls.

Kane wasn't sending hitmen anymore. He was sending an army.

“They’re breaching the east wing perimeter!” Daniel shouted over the radio, gunfire echoing in the background. “They’ve got thermal breaching charges—!”

BOOM.

The eastern gallery doors blew inward in a thunderous explosion of splintered wood and flying glass. A wall of smoke rolled down the corridor, pierced instantly by the sharp, brilliant muzzle flashes of tactical rifles.

“Fall back!” I yelled, grabbing Sarah by the arm and hauling her behind the massive stone pillar of the grand staircase as a hail of automatic gunfire chewed the plaster off the walls above our heads.

Shadowy figures clad in black tactical gear poured through the smoking breach, their night-vision goggles glowing an eerie, predatory green in the dark.

“Welcome to my house,” I whispered into the dark, pulling the trigger.
