Chapter 18 - The Hanging CageAs I reached the base of the crane control platform, two armed mercenaries stepped out from behind a stack of wooden crates, automatic rifles raised.

I didn't give them time to aim. I dropped to one knee, firing twice in rapid succession. Both men dropped instantly, sliding off the wet metal platform into the dark water below.
I scrambled up the steel ladder to the crane operator’s cabin, kicking the glass door open. Inside, a terrified local dockhand was tied to a chair with industrial zip-ties, while the manual override lever for the container hoist had been wired to a remote detonator.
The timer hit 00:15.
I ignored the detonator, ripped the manual emergency brake lever downward with all my strength, and threw my full weight against the heavy gears.

The massive steel cables groaned in protest, metal grinding against metal as the hanging container plummeted downward—stopping just three feet above the concrete deck of the pier with a deafening crash that shook the entire waterfront.
I didn't wait for the dust to settle. I sprinted out onto the gantry, grabbed a heavy iron crowbar from the toolbox, and jammed it into the rusted double doors of the shipping container, wrenching them open with a furious roar.
