Chapter 20 - The Fortress RestoredThree weeks later, the headlines across Chicago screamed of sweeping federal indictments, dismantling the largest political corruption and smuggling ring in the history of the Midwest. Victor Kane and his remaining syndicate bosses were locked away in federal supermax facilities with no hope of parole.

The estate north of Chicago looked different now. The iron gates were still locked, the cameras still scanned the perimeter, and the guards still walked their patrols—but the heavy, suffocating shadow of the past had finally lifted.
I stood on the east wing balcony, watching the late autumn sun dip below the horizon, painting the Chicago skyline in brilliant shades of violet and gold.
Soft footsteps approached behind me. I turned to see Claire walking out onto the veranda, holding a steaming mug of coffee, looking stronger, brighter, and more alive than the day she first arrived at my door as a quiet housemaid.
“The federal prosecutor called,” Claire said softly, handing me the mug. “The trial is officially concluded. All charges against my past work under Kane have been expunged in exchange for our testimony.”
“And what about your future work?” I asked, leaning against the wooden railing.
Claire smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that reached all the way to her eyes. “Well, I hear the position of estate manager is currently vacant. Excellent pay, great security, and the owner makes a decent cup of coffee.”
Before I could answer, a small pair of arms wrapped tightly around my leg from behind, accompanied by the familiar, muffled texture of a patched-up stuffed rabbit.
I looked down. Lily looked up at me with those solemn, serious eyes, her flowered nightgown replaced by a bright yellow sweater.
“Mr. Adrian?” she whispered.
I knelt down on the wooden floorboards, exactly as I had done on that stormy night three weeks ago.
“Yes, Lily?”
She leaned forward and planted a quick, affectionate kiss on my cheek, clutching her rabbit tight.

“You’re the best giant in the whole world.”
I laughed, wrapping my arms around her and pulling both her and Claire close as the first stars of the evening began to blink into existence over the peaceful Chicago waterfront.
