Chapter 8 - The Price of LoyaltyThe foyer erupted into a chaotic symphony of violence. Glass shattered, stone chipped, and the acrid smell of cordite filled the air as Sarah and I laid down a punishing crossfire from behind the reinforced stone pillars. Two of Kane’s operators dropped instantly, clutching their chests as they hit the marble floor.

“They’re flanking the balcony!” Sarah yelled, firing three rapid shots upward.

I looked up just in time to see a heavy-set mercenary dropping a thermal smoke canister over the second-floor railing right above the hallway leading to the medical wing.

“They’re going for Claire and Lily!” I roared, adrenaline surging through my veins with terrifying clarity.

I didn't wait for cover. I vaulted over the base of the marble staircase, sprinting straight up the steps through a curtain of drifting white smoke, my Sig barking twice into the gloom. The mercenary on the landing staggered backward, tumbling over the glass railing to crash hard onto the foyer floor below.

I kicked open the door to the medical wing.

Michael was standing in front of Claire’s bed, holding a heavy iron IV pole like a spear, shielding little Lily who was curled into a tight ball behind him, clutching her battered rabbit so hard her knuckles were white.

“Are you hit?” I demanded, scanning the room.

“Clear!” Michael gasped, his chest heaving. “The antidote worked—Claire’s stable, but she’s still too weak to stand!”

“Take them through the secret exit behind the wardrobe now,” I ordered, shoving the heavy oak wardrobe aside to reveal the hidden steel chute leading down to the underground boat house. “Don't stop until you reach the lake cruiser.”

“And you?” Claire whispered from the bed, her voice a fragile, trembling ghost of itself as she reached out a weak hand. “Adrian... the ledger... it’s sewn into the lining of Lily’s stuffed rabbit.”

Everything clicked into place. Why Lily had chosen my door. Why the rabbit felt heavy. Why Kane wanted that child alive.
