Chapter 19 - The Warmth of DawnInside the dimly lit container, Claire and Lily sat huddled together against the cold metal wall. Claire was pale, shivering, and exhausted, but her arms were wrapped tightly around Lily, who was still clutching her battered stuffed rabbit like it was a shield against the world.

Lily looked up as the doors flew open, her wide eyes blinking against the harsh glare of my flashlight.

“Mr. Adrian?” she whispered, her voice cracking.

I dropped the crowbar, fell to my knees inside the container, and pulled both of them into my arms, letting out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for a lifetime.

“You’re safe,” I choked out, pressing my face against Claire’s shoulder. “I’ve got you. Nobody is ever touching you again.”

May you like

Claire let out a soft, shuddering sob, burying her face in my chest as the tension of the last forty-eight hours finally broke. “We thought... we thought we were too late,” she murmured.

“You’re never too late,” I said, standing up and lifting Lily into my arms while offering my hand to Claire. “Let’s go home.”
