Chapter 6 - The Federal GambitThirty minutes later, I stood in the grand foyer, my jacket damp from the tunnels, watching Sarah Vance pace across the Persian rug. She was sharp, ambitious, and had spent the last three years trying to nail Victor Kane to the wall without a single piece of admissible evidence holding up in court.

“You look like you just wrestled an alligator, Adrian,” she said, stopping to look me dead in the eye. “Word on the street is your estate was breached tonight. A little girl nearly lost her mother, and Kane’s cleaners were crawling through your foundations.”
“You’re well-informed for two in the morning, Sarah,” I replied coldly, tossing the recovered vial toward Michael, who was sprinting down the grand staircase toward the medical wing. “If you’re here to offer me federal protection, save your breath. I protect my own.”
“I’m not here to offer protection. I’m here to offer a war,” Sarah said, opening a leather briefcase and pulling out a thick manila folder stamped with red classified markings. “Kane isn't just running a smuggling ring on the Calumet River. He’s running an international human trafficking and extortion syndicate that reaches straight into the White House. And Claire Bennett used to be his chief financial analyst.”
The room seemed to tilt slightly on its axis.
“Claire?” I repeated.
“She wasn't hiding as a housemaid because she was scared, Adrian. She was hiding because she was building a digital paper trail to destroy him from the inside out,” Sarah said, slamming her hand onto the table. “She downloaded the master encryption keys onto a secure drive three weeks ago and vanished. Kane has been hunting her across three continents ever since.”
“And he finally tracked her here because she made one fatal mistake,” I muttered, completing the thought. “She needed a place impenetrable enough to keep her daughter safe while she figured out her next move.”
“And you gave it to her,” Sarah said softly. “Which means you’re in the crosshairs now, Adrian. Kane doesn't leave loose ends. If he can't get the ledger back, he’ll level this entire estate with every soul inside it.”

Before I could answer, the mansion’s emergency lighting flickered, turned a harsh, pulsing crimson, and died.
The entire estate went pitch black.
