Chapter 12 - The Ghost of the Contract

Three months after returning to San Francisco from Amalfi, my design empire was expanding at an unprecedented rate. Vance Luxury Designs was securing multi-million-dollar contracts across North America and Europe. I had built a fortress around my life—new security systems, new legal teams, and a completely private residence.

Then, on a rainy Tuesday morning, two federal marshals stepped into my glass-walled penthouse office.

"Clara Vance?" the lead marshal asked, pulling a thick envelope from his coat. "You’ve been served."

I opened the document in front of my senior staff. It was a formal freezing order on $2.5 million of my company’s primary operating accounts.

The plaintiff was a predatory private equity firm called Vanguard Holdings. According to the attached court filings, my business had defaulted on a high-interest corporate loan taken out eighteen months ago.

My hands remained steady, but my mind raced. I had never taken a single loan from Vanguard Holdings.

I called Arthur immediately. Within twenty minutes, he was in my office, scanning the contract attached to the filing.

"Look at page twelve," Arthur said, pointing to the signature block.

There, stamped in blue ink, was my official corporate seal, alongside a crisp, flawless reproduction of my signature. But it wasn't the signature that made my blood run cold—it was the date.

The contract was signed on the exact day I was in the hospital recovering from an emergency appendectomy two years ago.

"Who had physical access to your corporate seal while you were in surgery, Clara?" Arthur asked softly.

I closed my eyes as the horrifying memory resurfaced.

My mother had stayed at my apartment for three days while I was incapacitated. She had insisted on "taking care" of my mail and bringing me home-cooked broth.

She hadn't come to care for me. She had come to steal my corporate seal and pass it to Julian.
