Chapter 5 - The Confrontation Call

My phone rang as I was twenty minutes away from the coastal house. The caller ID displayed my mother’s name.

I connected the call to my car’s speaker system.

"Clara!" my mother’s voice exploded through the speakers, breathless and hysterical. "What did you do?! We are standing in the middle of the cruise port being treated like common criminals! The staff pushed our luggage onto Deck 2! Our credit cards were declined for the port fees!"

"Hello, Mom," I said smoothly, keeping my eyes on the highway. "How is the family trip going?"

"Don't you play cute with me!" she screamed. "You ruined everything! Serena’s parents are horrified! Your father is having a blood pressure spike! Fix this right now! Put your credit card back on the account!"

"I’m afraid I can’t do that," I replied calmly. "As you reminded me at the airport, I’m not really family. Dad wanted a trip without hearing about everything I’ve done for you. So I decided to relieve you of the burden of my money entirely."

"You selfish, spiteful child!" she cried out. "We gave you life! You owe us everything! How dare you humiliate us like this over a simple ticket exchange?!"

"It wasn't just about the ticket, Mom," I said, my tone turning ice-cold. "Where is Julian right now?"

There was a sudden, sharp silence on the line.

"Julian?" my mother stammered, her high-pitched anger suddenly wavering. "He’s... he’s at home. Restment... resting."

"No, he isn't," I said. "Julian is currently inside my $966,000 house in Monterey with a real estate agent and a forged power of attorney, trying to sell my home out from under me."

My mother gasped, but she didn't sound surprised. She sounded caught.

"Clara... listen to me," she pleaded, her voice dropping to a desperate whisper. "Julian owes money. Dangerous money. He made some bad investments, and people are threatening him! He just needed a short-term bridge loan, and he knew you wouldn't give it to him—"

"So you all planned this," I interrupted, the final piece of the puzzle falling into place. "You accepted the cruise so you could get out of the country, leave me out of the loop, and let Julian liquidate my property while I was away in Europe."

"We did it to save your brother!" she yelled.

"You did it by stealing from your daughter," I said. "Enjoy Deck 2, Mom. The coast guard and the sheriff are waiting for Julian at the front gate."

I hung up before she could utter another word.
