Chapter 6 - The Locksmith and the Law

I pulled into the driveway of the coastal home at precisely 2:15 PM.

Standing in front of the sweeping modern glass entrance were two Monterey County Sheriff patrol cars and an unmarked sedan belonging to my attorney, Arthur.

Inside the house, Julian and Serena were showing the real estate agent the master suite, completely oblivious to the flashing red and blue lights outside.

I stepped out of my car, joined by Arthur and Deputy Sheriff Miller.

"Ms. Vance," Deputy Miller said, checking his clipboard. "We’ve reviewed the title documents and the emergency stay issued by the judge. The property is unequivocally registered in your name alone. No power of attorney has been validly recorded."

"Thank you, Deputy," I said. "Let's go take my house back."

We walked up the stone steps. I used my physical override key to unlock the front door and pushed it open.

Julian was standing in the foyer, holding a glass of my vintage wine, smiling at the real estate agent. "And as you can see, the light in this hallway—"

He stopped dead in his tracks. The glass of wine slid from his fingers, shattering onto the imported Italian tile floor.

Serena gasped, her face draining of all color. "Clara?! What... what are you doing here? You're supposed to be on a plane to Athens!"

"My flight was delayed," I said quietly. "Permanently."

Deputy Miller stepped forward, his hand resting on his belt. "Julian Vance? Serena Vance?"

Julian swallowed hard, looking wildly between me, the police officer, and the real estate agent. "Officer, this is a family misunderstanding! My sister gave us permission to manage this property—"

"That is a lie," Arthur interrupted, stepping forward with a sheaf of legal documents. "I am Clara Vance’s legal counsel. You filed a fraudulent power of attorney with the county clerk at 11:00 AM today, forging my client’s signature. That constitutes felony forgery, grand theft attempt, and criminal trespass."

The real estate agent’s eyes went wide. "Wait... this house isn't authorized for sale?!"

"Absolutely not," Arthur said. "I suggest you leave immediately unless you wish to be cited as an accessory to fraud."

The agent didn't hesitate. He grabbed his briefcase, offered a quick apology to me, and hurried out the front door.

"Clara, please!" Serena burst out, taking a step toward me with hands raised. "Julian was desperate! He owed $400,000 to loan sharks from his failed crypto fund! They were going to hurt him! We were going to buy you a smaller condo with the leftover money after paying off his debt!"

May you like

"You were going to steal a million-dollar property I earned with my own sweat, leave me with nothing, and buy me a condo as a favor?" I looked at her with pure disgust. "You gave my cruise ticket away to your sister, lied to my face, and treated me like a bank account."

Deputy Miller drew his handcuffs. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for grand theft, forgery, and illegal entry. Place your hands behind your back."
