Chapter 13 - The Mastermind Behind the Mask

Arthur worked through the night to trace the origin of Vanguard Holdings. What we discovered was far more sinister than a simple defaulted debt.
Vanguard Holdings wasn't an independent firm. It was a shell corporation registered in Delaware, created just two years ago. And its managing director was a man named Marcus Sterling—a notorious shadow financier known for stripping distressed assets.
"There's more," Arthur said, slapping a file onto my desk the next afternoon. "Marcus Sterling isn't working alone. Guess who was recently hired as his executive vice president of marketing?"
He slid a high-resolution photograph across the table.
It was Serena.
She hadn't just divorced Julian and walked away empty-handed; she had leveraged the stolen corporate seal to secure a position with Sterling. Together, they had intentionally held onto the fraudulent $2.5 million loan agreement, waiting for my business to hit peak valuation before executing the debt demand.
Their goal wasn't just to collect money. The loan contract contained a predatory clause: in the event of a default, Vanguard Holdings was entitled to convert the unpaid debt into a controlling 51% equity stake in Vance Luxury Designs.
They didn't just want $2.5 million. They were trying to take over my entire company.
"They think they have you cornered," Arthur said. "Because the signature is verified by a public notary who witnessed the document two years ago."

"Which notary?" I asked, my eyes narrowing.
"A woman named Brenda Vance," Arthur revealed. "Your mother's sister."
