Chapter 9 - The Final Severance

"You have ten minutes to gather whatever personal belongings you brought here," I said, my voice empty of any remaining warmth. "After that, my security team will escort you off the property."

"Clara, please..." my mother gasped, suddenly dropping to her knees, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. "We were desperate! Julian threatened to end his life if he couldn't pay those debts! We didn't know what else to do! You always have money... you always survive! We thought you would understand!"

"I always survive because I work for everything I have," I said, looking down at her without a trace of pity. "You didn't protect Julian; you enabled him until he became a felon. And you sacrificed me to do it."

"Where are we supposed to go?!" my father shouted, tears of frustration streaming down his face. "We have nothing left! Our credit cards are maxed out!"

"You can rent a small apartment," I replied. "Just like millions of other people do. But you will never touch another cent of my money for as long as you live."

The security guards stepped forward, politely but firmly placing their hands on my parents' shoulders.

My mother wept hysterically, begging and cursing my name in the same breath as she was led out the door. My father stared at me with pure resentment, unable to accept that the daughter he had exploited for years had finally cut the anchor.
