Chapter 16 - The Gala Ambush

That evening was the annual San Francisco Architectural & Design Gala—the biggest industry event of the year. I was scheduled to receive the Designer of the Year award in front of five hundred elite investors, developers, and international press.
Serena and Marcus arrived together, wearing matching smug expressions, fully expecting me to use my acceptance speech to announce a "strategic partnership" with Vanguard Holdings.
The grand ballroom of the St. Regis was filled with crystal chandeliers, champagne towers, and flashing cameras.
When my name was announced, the room erupted into applause. I walked up the marble steps to the podium, holding the heavy glass trophy.
"Thank you," I said into the microphone, my voice echoing through the grand hall. "Tonight is a celebration of design, vision, and integrity. But before I accept this honor, there is a special announcement I must make regarding the future of my firm."
In the front row, Serena lifted her champagne glass toward me, winking.
"As many of you know," I continued, "building a business requires immense sacrifice. But sometimes, the greatest threats to a vision don't come from market competition. They come from corporate extortion."
The room grew dead quiet. Marcus Sterling stood up from his table, his eyes narrowing.
I gestured to the AV booth. "Please look at the main screens."
The massive projector screens behind me flickered to life. Instead of my design portfolio, they displayed the high-definition video recorded in my conference room four hours earlier.
Serena’s voice blasted through the ballroom's surround-sound speakers:
"Julian was a weak, useless idiot who couldn't execute a simple plan... I'm divorcing him. He’s right where he belongs."
The screen immediately transitioned to the audio recording of my mother confessing to the stolen corporate seal, followed by bank records linking Vanguard Holdings to illicit off-shore accounts in the Cayman Islands.
Gasps filled the ballroom. Photographers spun around, their camera flashes blinding Marcus and Serena, who were frozen in absolute shock.

"Those documents," I said calmly into the microphone, pointing toward the back of the room, "have just been submitted to the United States District Court."
The heavy double doors of the ballroom slammed open. Four FBI special agents, accompanied by federal prosecutors, marched down the center aisle.
