Chapter 18 - The Total Collapse

A month later, the final court proceedings commenced.
The courtroom was packed with journalists. Sitting at the defense table were Serena, Marcus Sterling, and my mother, who had been indicted as an unindicted co-conspirator due to her role in facilitating the theft of the corporate seal.
Julian sat in the witness stand, dressed in an orange jumpsuit. He refused to make eye contact with his mother or his ex-wife.
His testimony was brutal, precise, and completely damning. He detailed how Serena had coordinated with Marcus Sterling to draft the fraudulent loan, how my mother had stolen the seal, and how they had planned to force me out of my own company once I made my first million.
When the judge pronounced the sentences, the courtroom was breathless.
Marcus Sterling was sentenced to eight years in federal prison. Serena was sentenced to six years for felony conspiracy and wire fraud. Julian’s plea deal earned him two years in medium-security detention. My mother received three years of strict house arrest and five hundred hours of community service, her name permanently ruined in every social circle she had ever cared about.
As the bailiffs led Serena and Marcus away, my mother broke away from her public defender and rushed toward me in the gallery hallway.
"Clara! Please!" she sobbed, clutching at my coat sleeve. "Look at what you’ve done to us! Your family is destroyed! Your brother is in prison! I am trapped in a tiny apartment on house arrest! Is this what you wanted?!"
I stopped and looked down at her.

"I didn't destroy this family, Mom," I said, my voice measured and completely devoid of anger. "You destroyed it the moment you decided that my life, my hard work, and my happiness were acceptable sacrifices for Julian’s greed. You built your home on lies, and now you have to live in the ruins."
I pulled my sleeve from her grip and walked toward the glass doors of the courthouse.
