Chapter 14 - The Bloodline Contract

With Julian captured and placed under maximum-security solitary confinement in a black-site facility, Don Vane’s hold on Chicago was crumbling. But my father, Arthur Hart, made one final, catastrophic mistake.
Driven mad by the total loss of his wealth and social standing, my father went to the media.
He held a televised press conference outside the federal courthouse, claiming that I had manipulated the legal system, forged financial documents, and used Mafia coercion to steal Hart Enterprises from my own family. He painted himself as a grieving, victimized patriarch and demanded a judge void the transfer contract I had forced him to sign.
The news blew up overnight. Stock prices for Moretti-Hart Global dipped four percent as public outrage mounted over the "mafia bride stealing her family's legacy."
"He thinks he can use the court of public opinion to fight me," I said, pacing around the executive boardroom as the news broadcast played on the wall-mounted screens.
"I can have him quieted by sunset," Nikolai offered, his voice laced with absolute lethality. "A heart attack in his sleep. Clean."
"No," I replied instantly. "If he dies now, he becomes a martyr. People will say we murdered him to hide the truth. I don't want him dead, Nikolai. I want him exposed so thoroughly that even his own shadow will be ashamed to follow him."
I pulled out my secure hard drive—the one containing twenty years of archived records from my grandfather’s personal vault.
"It’s time to show the world who Arthur Hart really is," I said.
The next afternoon, I scheduled a live, international broadcast from the top floor of Moretti-Hart headquarters. Over two hundred journalists filled the auditorium, cameras flashing frantically as I stepped onto the stage, radiant in a tailored burgundy maternity suit.
My father sat in the front row, flanked by his legal team, a smug, triumphant smile on his face. He believed he had trapped me into a corner.
"Good afternoon," I began, my voice echoing with unshakeable clarity. "My father, Arthur Hart, has recently claimed that I stole his company through deceit and intimidation. Today, I am releasing the complete, unedited financial records of the Hart family dating back thirty years."
I clicked a remote. Behind me, massive high-definition screens lit up with bank ledgers, offshore wire transfers, and confidential medical reports.
The room gasped.
"In 2012," I explained, pointing to the screen, "Arthur Hart embezzled forty million dollars from the Hart Foundation’s children’s hospital fund to cover his illegal gambling debts in Macau. To hide the crime, he falsified my grandfather's will."
My father’s face drained of all color. "That's... that's classified! Where did you get that?!"
"And in 2018," I continued mercilessly, "when the board discovered the discrepancy, Arthur placed the blame on a young junior accountant, who went to prison for three years for a crime my father committed. I have personally paid that accountant ten million dollars in compensation and cleared his record this morning."
The journalists erupted into a frenzy of questions, light flashes blinding the room.
I turned my eyes directly onto my father, who was shaking violently in his seat.
"You were never a businessman, Father," I said softly into the microphone. "You were a parasite who lived off my grandfather's genius and my hard work. You didn't lose your company to a Mafia takeover. You lost it because you were incompetent, greedy, and weak."
Two federal agents walked into the auditorium, stepping up behind my father and slapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists.

As they dragged him out in front of dozens of live news cameras, my father looked back at me, tears streaming down his face, begging. "Evelyn! Please! I’m your father!"
"You ceased being my father the night you told me to smile while Julian broke my heart," I said, turning away from him to face the cameras. "This press conference is over."
