Chapter 8 - The Shadow Summit

Two weeks later, the day of our official wedding arrived.

It was not a quiet, private affair. It was a royal coronation of Chicago’s new underworld power couple.

The ceremony was held at the historic Holy Name Cathedral, followed by a lavish reception at the Drake Hotel. Over five hundred guests attended—politicians, CEOs, Mafia bosses from across the country, and international dignitaries.

I stood in the bridal suite, staring at myself in the full-length mirror.

My wedding dress was a masterpiece—a custom, obsidian-black silk gown detailed with intricate silver lace embroidery, cascading into a breathtaking six-foot train. I refused to wear white. White was the color of innocence, of the naïve girl who let people step on her. Black was the color of sovereignty.

Penny stood behind me, fixing my veil, her eyes shining with emotional pride.

"You look like an absolute goddess who's about to conquer the world, Evelyn," Penny whispered, adjusting the silver crown pinned into my dark hair.

"I’m not conquering it, Penny," I smiled softly into the mirror. "I'm just taking what belongs to me."

A soft knock sounded at the door. Nikolai stepped inside, dressed in a sharp black tuxedo. Custom dictates the groom shouldn't see the bride before the ceremony, but Nikolai Moretti never followed anyone's rules.

Penny gave us a quick nod and slipped out of the room, closing the door behind her.

Nikolai stood at the entrance, his breath catching in his throat as he looked at me in the black gown. For a man who ruled millions with an iron fist, he looked completely awestruck.

"Evelyn..." he murmured, walking slowly toward me. "You are... breathtaking."

"Is it too unconventional?" I asked, gesturing to the black silk.

"It is perfection," he said, reaching out to cup my jaw, his thumb softly tracing my lower lip. "You look like a queen ready to sit on a throne."

"Are you ready for this, Nikolai?" I asked, looking into his deep gray eyes. "Once we walk down that aisle, our lives are bound. In blood, in business, in everything."

"I have been ready for this since the moment I saw you in that service hallway," Nikolai said softly, his voice thick with sincere emotion. "You think I chose you that night because of strategy, Evelyn?"

I blinked, caught off guard. "Wasn't it?"

Nikolai gave a low, dark chuckle. "I’ve watched you for two years, Evelyn. I watched you run your father’s company while he took the credit. I watched you handle crises with brilliant, cold precision. I watched you endure your family’s stupidity with terrifying grace. I was waiting for Julian to ruin things with you so I could step in."

My heart did a sudden, violent flip in my chest. "What?"

"Julian didn't fall for Serena by accident," Nikolai confessed smoothly, a dangerous, brilliant gleam in his eyes. "I ensured Serena was invited to every private party Julian attended. I leaked Julian's offshore debts to Serena so she would think he was the richer brother. I set the stage, Evelyn. But the choice to take my hand... that was all yours."

I stared at him, my mouth slightly open, my mind racing as I put the pieces together.

He hadn't just rescued me. He had orchestrated the entire chessboard from the dark, waiting for the perfect moment to pluck me out of my misery and place me by his side.

"You terrifying, manipulative bastard," I whispered, though a dark, thrilling warmth bloomed in my chest.

"Are you angry?" Nikolai asked, stepping closer, pulling me tightly against his body.

I looked up at him, wrapping my gloved hands around his lapels, pulling him down to my lips.

"I think," I whispered against his mouth, "it's the most romantic thing anyone has ever done for me."
