Chapter 7 - The Crown of Thorns

By dawn, the penthouse was spotless. Nikolai’s cleanup crew had erased every trace of blood and bullet holes as if the night had been nothing more than a bad dream.
Julian and Elder Marcus were stripped of all power, locked away in an underground holding facility awaiting formal execution by the Moretti Council for treason.
With Julian officially eliminated from the picture, the Hart family business collapsed into absolute chaos.
At 9:00 AM, my father and mother arrived at the penthouse building, practically begging security to let them up. Nikolai permitted it, wanting to give me my final closure.
When they entered the living room, they looked ten years older. My father’s suit was wrinkled, his hair disheveled. My mother was pale, her face free of makeup, holding a weeping Serena by the hand.
"Evelyn!" my father gasped, rushing forward, though Nikolai’s guards immediately stepped in front of him, stopping him six feet away. "Evelyn, please! You have to save us! The banks are freezing our assets! The Moretti Council pulled all their investments! Hart Enterprises is going into bankruptcy by noon!"
I sat on the white leather sofa, sipping my morning tea, wearing a tailored cream suit, looking every bit the ruthless executive I had become. Nikolai stood silently beside me, his hands resting casually in his pockets, an ominous shadow at my back.
"Why are you coming to me, Father?" I asked calmly, setting my teacup down. "Serena is the daughter you love. Ask her to fix it."
My mother stepped forward, her voice high and desperate. "Evelyn, don't be cruel! Serena is just a girl! She doesn't know anything about business! You are the strong one! You’ve always taken care of us!"
"I took care of you because I loved you," I said, standing up slowly. "And you used that love as a weapon against me. You took everything I built, everything I worked for, and gave it to Serena on a silver platter. And when Julian humiliated me in front of the entire city, you told me not to embarrass you."
Serena looked up, tears streaming down her face, her voice choked. "Evelyn... I’m sorry... I was foolish... Julian promised me the world... I didn't mean to take him from you..."
"You didn't take him from me, Serena," I said, looking down at her with absolute coldness. "You took my trash. And now you're drowning in it."
My father fell to his knees, his hands trembling. "Please, Evelyn. What do you want? Name your price. Just save the company. Save our family name."
I pulled a document from my desk and threw it onto the coffee table in front of him.
"This is an absolute surrender of all Hart Enterprises shares," I said. "You will sign over ninety percent of the company to me. You and Mother will resign from the board immediately. You will move out of the estate and live on a restricted monthly pension that I control."
My father gasped, staring at the paper. "Ninety percent?! That leaves us with nothing! We’ll be living on your charity!"
"You'll be living on my mercy," I corrected him sharp as a razor. "Which is far more than you gave me. Sign it, or walk out that door and watch the federal marshals seize your house by three o'clock."
My father looked at the paper, then at my mother, and finally at Nikolai, who was watching him with cold, dead eyes.
Realizing he had no moves left, no allies, and no hope, my father picked up the pen with a trembling hand and signed his name on the dotted line.
When he finished, I took the document, checked the signatures, and handed it to my assistant.
"Get out of my house," I said quietly.
My mother tried to reach for my hand. "Evelyn... please..."
"Leave," I commanded, my voice carrying an absolute authority that left no room for argument.
Defeated, humiliated, and broken, my parents led a weeping Serena out of the penthouse.
As the private elevator doors closed on them, closing the door on my past forever, I felt a heavy weight lift from my chest.
Nikolai walked up behind me, wrapping his strong arms around my waist, pulling my back against his chest. He rested his chin on my shoulder, looking out at the city skyline with me.
"How does it feel, my queen?" he whispered softly.
May you like
"It feels... empty," I admitted quietly. "I thought taking everything from them would feel better."
"Revenge only clears the land, Evelyn," Nikolai said, kissing my temple gently. "Now... we build our empire."
