Chapter 18 - War of the Shadows

The final reckoning was swift and absolute.

That very night, Nikolai and I descended into the subterranean holding facility beneath the limestone manor house.

Elder Marcus sat tied to a heavy steel chair in the center of the concrete cell, bruised and hopeless. When the heavy door opened and Nikolai walked in beside me, Marcus let out a blood-curdling shriek, believing he was seeing a ghost.

"N-Nikolai?!" Marcus gasped, wet terror filling his eyes. "No! You... you died in the river!"

"I don't die easily, Marcus," Nikolai said coldly, stepping up into the light. "Especially when I have a family to come home to."

"It was the Russians!" Marcus stammered frantically, begging for his life. "They forced me! They offered me fifty million to give up your convoy route! Please, Nikolai! We’ve known each other for thirty years!"

"And for thirty years, you were a parasite waiting for a moment of weakness," I stepped forward, taking Nikolai’s gun and resting the cold barrel directly against Marcus’s forehead.

Marcus stared at me in shock. "Evelyn... please... you're a Hart... you're civilized—"

"I was civilized," I corrected him softly. "Before my family betrayed me, before Julian tried to ruin me, and before you tried to kill my husband and my child. I have learned that the only way to keep peace... is to make sure your enemies are too dead to break it."

BANG.

I pulled the trigger without flinching.

Marcus collapsed forward, the last remaining traitor of the old regime eliminated forever.

Nikolai looked at me, taking the gun from my hand, his face filled with pure, unadulterated devotion. He pulled me close, kissing my temple.

"The old council is dead," Nikolai declared. "From this night forward, there are no elders, no capos with independent power. There is only you and me."

Over the next forty-eight hours, our joint forces launched a massive, coordinated night-sweep across the Midwest. The remaining Russian Bratva hideouts were dismantled, their assets seized, and their leadership permanently expelled from North America.

The Moretti-Hart alliance was no longer just a crime syndicate or a corporate entity. It was an untouchable, sovereign superpower.
