Chapter 10 - The Mastermind's Hand

Six months later.

The summer sun streamed through the massive glass windows of the Moretti-Hart Global headquarters in downtown Chicago.

I sat behind the massive executive desk on the top floor, signing off on a multi-billion-dollar acquisition of a European shipping conglomerate. My belly showed a small, elegant bump beneath my tailored navy dress—our first child, the heir to the unified Moretti and Hart empire.

The double doors opened, and Nikolai walked in, carrying two cups of espresso. He walked over, setting my decaf cup on the desk, before leaning down to press a soft kiss against my lips and another against my growing belly.

"How is our little Don doing today?" he asked softly, resting his large hand over my bump.

"Kicking," I smiled, placing my hand over his. "Probably plotting a corporate takeover already."

Nikolai chuckled, pulling a chair over and sitting beside me.

As I organized the documents on my desk, my eyes fell on an old, leather-bound safe-deposit box that had been transferred to my office from my late grandfather’s estate earlier that morning.

"What's that?" Nikolai asked, nodding toward the vintage iron box.

"My grandfather’s personal ledger," I said, pulling out a small silver key. "The bank finally released it to me since I am now the sole controller of the Hart estate."

I inserted the key and turned it. The heavy lock clicked open.

Inside were old yellowed letters, land deeds, and a dark leather journal belonging to my grandfather, William Hart—the man who had built the original family fortune before my father nearly ruined it.

I opened the journal to the last entry, dated twenty years ago, just weeks before my grandfather passed away.

As my eyes scanned the hand-written ink, my breath caught in my throat. My hands began to tremble.

Entry: October 14th. My son Arthur is a fool. Weak-willed, obsessed with superficial vanity, and easily manipulated. He favors Serena because she is shallow like him. But Evelyn... Evelyn has the blood of a true empire builder. She has the mind, the grit, and the cold discipline required to carry this family into the next century.

However, Arthur will try to strip her of her birthright. Therefore, I have made a private pact with my old ally, Don Carmine Moretti.

I gasped, looking up at Nikolai. "Your grandfather..."

Nikolai slowly stood up, his eyes locking onto the paper, his expression unreadable. "Keep reading."

I swallowed hard and continued reading aloud:

Don Carmine and I have agreed to a secret blood trust. The entire core equity of Hart Enterprises will be locked in an irrevocable trust, hidden beneath shell accounts, accessible only by a joint signature of my true successor—Evelyn—and Don Carmine’s rightful heir, Nikolai Moretti.

If Arthur ever attempts to bypass Evelyn, or if Julian Moretti attempts to usurp Nikolai, the trust will automatically activate, giving Nikolai total legal authority to strip Arthur's branch of all assets and hand full control to Evelyn.

Nikolai is a young boy now, but Carmine assures me he is being raised as a predator. Evelyn will need a predator to protect her from the sheep in our own family. They are destined to rule together.

I dropped the journal onto the desk, my mind spinning violently.

I looked up at Nikolai, my heart hammering in my chest.

"You..." I whispered, the full, terrifying scope of the truth settling into my brain. "You didn't just research me in that hallway... You didn't just engineer Julian's affair with Serena two years ago..."

Nikolai stepped closer, his expression softening into an intense, deep devotion. He didn't deny it. He didn't try to hide it.

"My grandfather told me about the trust when I was eighteen, Evelyn," Nikolai said quietly, his voice deep and steady. "He showed me a picture of you when you were managing your first charity event at nineteen. He told me, 'That girl is your equal. Wait for her. Protect her. And when the time comes, give her the world.'"

Tears welled in my eyes—not of betrayal, but of an overwhelming, profound shock.

"The night of the engagement..." I breathed, looking at him. "You knew Julian was going to propose to Serena?"

"I bought Serena the white dress she wore that night," Nikolai confessed softly, kneeling beside my chair, taking both of my hands in his. "I had my men leak the dress location to her. I knew Julian’s vanity would push him to make a public spectacle. I knew your parents would side with Serena. And I knew... I knew that night was the only night you would finally be broken enough to let go of your loyalty to them and take my hand."

"You set me free," I whispered.

"I gave you the push," Nikolai corrected gently, lifting my hands to his lips, kissing my knuckles with fierce tenderness. "You were always a queen, Evelyn. You were just living in a cage built by weak people. I just opened the door and handed you the sword."

I stared at the man kneeling before me—the ruthless Mafia Don who had spent years playing a long, invisible game of chess across Chicago, not to destroy me, but to dismantle every single obstacle standing between me and my true destiny.

I leaned forward, cupping his face in my hands, looking deep into those icy gray eyes that had become my safe haven, my strength, and my home.

"You are insane," I whispered, a tear spilling over my cheek as a breathless laugh escaped my lips.

Nikolai smiled—a warm, breathtakingly handsome smile that was reserved only for me.

"I am utterly, irrevocably devoted to you, my queen," he murmured, pulling me down into a kiss that tasted of victory, power, and an eternity of unstoppable love.

Out the window, the sun shone brightly over Chicago—a city that no longer belonged to the fools, the snakes, or the pretenders, but to the King and Queen who had conquered it together.
