Chapter 16 - The Fallen King

The death of Don Vane sent shockwaves through the global underworld. The Syndicate of Seven dissolved within days as rival factions fought over the power vacuum, leaving Nikolai and me in absolute, undisputed control of the Midwest shipping lanes and financial networks.
Two weeks later, at a private hospital overlooking the lake, I gave birth to our son—a healthy, dark-haired boy with Nikolai’s piercing gray eyes. We named him William, after my grandfather.
For three months, peace settled over our lives. I focused on recovering, bonding with my baby, and managing the international restructuring of Moretti-Hart Global from our secure estate.
Then, the true storm hit.
It happened during a routine convoy trip. Nikolai was returning from a high-level summit with the New York families when his armored motorcade was ambushed on an isolated stretch of Interstate 90.
A heavy rocket-propelled grenade struck Nikolai's lead vehicle. The bridge collapsed, sending his car plunging eighty feet into the freezing, violent currents of the river below.
By midnight, rescue teams had pulled the wreckage from the river.
The vehicle was empty. Nikolai’s bloodied watch and custom silver ring were found caught in the twisted metal of the driver’s side door. His body was nowhere to be found.
The media erupted. The news headlines were ruthless: “DON NIKOLAI MORETTI PRESUMED DEAD IN BRIDGE AMBUSH.” “THE MORETTI EMPIRE COLLAPSES: WHO WILL TAKE THE THRONE?”
Within hours, the capos and regional bosses of the Moretti crime family gathered at the limestone manor house. They didn't come to mourn; they came like vultures, ready to tear the empire apart and claim the leadership for themselves.
Elder Marcus—who had managed to post bail while awaiting trial—stepped up to the head of the boardroom table, looking around at the gathered mob bosses.
"Nikolai is gone!" Marcus declared loudly, slamming his fist down. "A woman cannot rule the Moretti family! Evelyn is an outsider, a Hart! The council must elect a new Don tonight!"
The room erupted into loud shouting as capos drew their weapons, arguing over who had the biggest crew and the most territory.
The heavy mahogany doors of the boardroom swung open.
I stepped into the room.
I wore a floor-length, high-necked suit of armor-plated black silk, my hair pulled back into a tight, pristine bun, wearing my silver crown. In my right hand, I carried Nikolai’s custom mahogany cane; in my left, a heavy leather dossier.
Behind me walked twenty fully armed, black-clad strike members of Nikolai’s personal elite guard—men who owed loyalty to no one except Nikolai... and me.
The room fell instantly dead silent.
"Sit down, Marcus," I said, my voice echoing across the dark wood paneling with the terrifying weight of absolute authority.
Marcus sneered. "Evelyn, you have no authority here! You are a grieving widow! Go home and nurse your baby!"
I didn't answer him with words. I raised Nikolai's cane and slammed the steel tip down onto the marble floor.
CLANG.
My elite guards raised their submachine guns, aiming them directly at Marcus’s head.
I walked to the head of the table, pulling out the leather dossier, and tossed it into the center of the table.
"That dossier contains the private banking keys, asset deeds, and execution codes for every single business represented in this room," I said, looking each capo dead in the eye. "Nikolai didn't trust any of you. He gave me the keys to destroy your entire lives with a single keystroke if any of you ever betrayed the throne."
A capo from the Southside spoke up, his voice tight. "Nikolai is dead, Mrs. Moretti. A contract without a Don is worthless."
"Nikolai built this empire," I stepped up to the head chair, placing my hands on the leather backrest. "But I managed its money. I secured its alliances. I eliminated Julian, Arthur, and Don Vane. If any man in this room believes he is qualified to challenge my right to rule, step forward now and draw your weapon."
Not a single capo moved. The room was deathly quiet.

Marcus looked around frantically, realizing no one was willing to die to support him. "You... you're a monster..."
"I am the Don’s wife," I corrected him sharply. "And until Nikolai returns... I am the Don."
