Chapter 19 - The Ultimate Truth

Six months after the fall of the Bratva, on a crisp autumn evening, Nikolai and I sat on the private terrace of our estate, watching our baby boy, William, take his very first steps across the soft velvet grass.
The city of Chicago sparkled in the distance beneath a golden sunset—peaceful, quiet, and entirely ours.
Penny sat at the garden table with us, sipping wine, laughing as she watched William stumble into Nikolai’s open arms.
"I still can't believe how far we've come," Penny said, looking at me with deep affection. "Remember two years ago? When you were standing in that service hallway, weeping over Julian’s stupid engagement party?"
"I wasn't weeping," I corrected her with a faint smile. "I was waiting for my tears, but they never came."
"Because you knew," Nikolai said, carrying William over and setting him on my lap before sitting beside me. "Deep down, you knew you were meant for something far greater than being Julian's trophy wife."
I smiled, running my fingers through my son's soft hair.
"Speaking of Julian," Penny leaned in, her voice dropping. "I heard from my contacts at the federal penitentiary today. Julian tried to petition for early parole, claiming he was emotionally manipulated by Serena."
"And?" Nikolai asked casually, taking a sip of his bourbon.
"The judge didn't even open the file," Penny laughed. "He added five more years to his sentence for attempt to bribe a federal officer. He’s going to be in a cell until he’s sixty."
"Good," I said smoothly. "He can use the time to think about his 'destiny.'"
As Penny left us to catch her flight to London, Nikolai reached into his suit jacket and pulled out an old, velvet-bound ledger—the original copy of my grandfather’s secret trust.
"There is still one thing I never understood, Evelyn," Nikolai murmured, flipping open the delicate, yellowed pages. "My grandfather and yours signed this trust thirty years ago. But the master encryption key that activated the trust in our corporate bank system... it was sent from a private IP address in Chicago three days before Julian announced his engagement to Serena at the ballroom."
Nikolai turned his dark, intense gray eyes onto me, a subtle, highly dangerous realization beginning to flicker in his sharp gaze.
"The council didn't receive the audit reports on Julian's fraud because your grandfather left them," Nikolai whispered, stepping closer to me. "The encryption key was activated by someone living in Chicago... someone who had access to the Hart vault years before anyone else."

I sat quietly, taking a slow sip of my tea, looking at my husband with an unreadable, serene smile.
"Nikolai..." I murmured softly, setting my teacup down on the saucer with a soft, delicate clink. "Did you really think you were the only mastermind playing chess in that hallway?"
