Chapter 19 - The Empty RingOne evening, while reviewing the final audit reports in the estate study, I opened the small mahogany drawer in my desk.

Inside sat a small velvet box containing the engagement ring Arya had left behind on her vanity six months ago.

I picked it up, feeling the cold, glittering diamonds against my palm. For a long time, that ring had felt like a symbol of betrayal, a reminder of the day my life supposedly ended.

"Thinking about melting it down?"

I looked up. Tessa was standing in the doorway, leaning against the frame with a cup of coffee in her hand, a knowing smile playing on her lips.

"Actually," I said, closing the box and sliding it into the wastebasket beside the desk. "I was thinking about how much room it takes up in a drawer that's meant for better things."

Tessa chuckled, walking over and setting a fresh cup of coffee on the desk. "Good riddance, then."

"Good riddance," I agreed.

I stood up from my chair, my legs steady, my posture strong, and walked around the desk to stand beside her.
