Chapter 11 - The Quiet AftermathThe mail carrier, an elderly local named Arthur who walked the coastal route rain or shine, dropped a thick, cream-colored envelope into the wooden box at the end of the driveway.

Roman, holding little Maya’s hand as she chased a skittering crab near the rocks, noticed the delivery. He walked down, retrieved the mail, and flipped through the stack: a water bill, a flyer for the local autumn festival, and the heavy, unembossed envelope addressed to Celeste Vascari.

He frowned. There was no return address.

Inside the kitchen, Celeste was chopping vegetables for lunch while listening to the low hum of public radio. She wiped her hands on a linen towel when Roman walked in and handed her the letter.

She looked down at the handwriting. Her fingers froze.

"Who is it?" Roman asked, his protective instincts instantly flaring, though his voice remained carefully measured.

"An old colleague," Celeste said quietly. She used a butter knife to slice open the flap, pulling out a single sheet of heavy cardstock.

Roman watched her eyes scan the text. The color drained slightly from her face, replaced by a cold, sharp focus that he remembered all too well from the Chicago days.

"Trouble?" he asked, stepping closer.

"Not trouble," Celeste murmured, folding the paper back up. "An invitation. Or a warning. Depending on how you look at it."

She handed the note to him. Roman's dark eyes scanned the brief message:

“The old board is reforming under new management. They are asking for The Architect. If you stay too long in the sun, the shadows will eventually come looking for you.”

Roman stared at the paper for a long, silent moment. Then, with a steady hand, he walked over to the wood-burning stove and dropped the note directly into the crackling flames, watching it curl, blacken, and turn to ash.

"They won't find anything here," Roman said, turning back to his wife with an expression of absolute resolve. "Because The Architect doesn't exist anymore. And neither does the boss."

Celeste looked at him, the tension in her shoulders easing. A genuine, radiant smile touched her lips as she stepped into his arms.

"Good," she whispered against his chest. "Because this life is much better."
