Chapter 30 - The Return of the ArchitectThat evening, after Maya was tucked safely into bed and the house had settled into silence, Roman found Celeste sitting at the antique oak desk in their home office.

The encrypted laptop—the one that hadn't been opened since the night they brought down Detective Gallo—was plugged into the high-speed router. The screen cast a cool, emerald-green glow across her face.

Roman walked up behind her, placing his hands gently on her shoulders, feeling the familiar tension coiled in her muscles.

"You're going to do it," he stated quietly.

"I'm going to look," she corrected, her fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with effortless speed. "If the Atlas Group is using Vanguard's old structural code, I left a master backdoor embedded in the architecture seven years ago. A fail-safe designed precisely for this kind of corporate parasite."

"And if you open that backdoor, they’ll know someone is probing their network," Roman warned, pulling up a chair and sitting down right beside her.

"Let them try to find me," Celeste offered a thin, dangerous smile that made her look less like a small-town bookseller and more like the legendary underworld ghost she truly was. "The Architect doesn't leave fingerprints."

For three hours, the office was silent save for the furious clack of the keyboard. Streams of cascading code, encrypted firewalls, and offshore transactional flows scrolled down the monitor.

Suddenly, Celeste stopped typing. Her breath hitched.

"What is it?" Roman leaned in close.

"Look at the routing nodes," she pointed a finger at a complex tree diagram on the screen. "Atlas isn't just a cyber-syndicate, Roman. They're backed by someone from your old life. Someone who survived the Chicago purge."

Roman’s eyes locked onto the screen. A specific corporate alias flashed in red text—an offshore shell company fronted by a name he thought he would never see again.

Nikolai Rostov.
