Chapter 40 - The Campaign RallyThe final municipal debate took place in the packed auditorium of the local community center. The room was buzzing with tension as local residents, fishermen, small business owners, and out-of-state developers packed the wooden bleachers.

Celeste stood at the podium wearing a tailored navy blazer, her expression calm, collected, and utterly unshakeable. Her opponent, a career bureaucrat backed secretly by the real estate development PACs, tried repeatedly to paint her as an outsider with an unverified corporate background.
"Mrs. Vascari has lived here for only a few years," her opponent sneered into the microphone. "She keeps her past locked away behind closed doors. Can we really trust someone with a mysterious background to protect our town's future?"
A murmur ran through the crowd.
Celeste stepped up to the microphone. She didn't flinch. She didn't look down at her notes. She looked directly out at the faces of the people she had lived alongside, shopped with, and fought for over the last several years.
"My opponent is right about one thing," Celeste said, her voice clear, resonant, and carrying effortlessly across the auditorium. "My past is complicated. I spent years working inside complex financial systems, corporate law rooms, and high-stakes legal battlegrounds. I know how powerful men operate behind closed doors. I know how they use shell companies, intimidation, and hidden loopholes to take what belongs to hardworking people."
She paused, letting her dark eyes sweep across the room, locking briefly on the corporate fixers sitting uncomfortably in the back row.
"That is exactly why I am running for this seat," she continued, her voice hardening with absolute conviction. "Because no one in this town will ever be bullied, cheated, or pushed off their land while I am sitting on that bench. I didn't come here to hide my past. I came here to use every lesson it taught me to protect our future."

The silence in the auditorium lasted for a fraction of a second—and then the entire room erupted into thunderous, standing applause.
Roman stood at the back of the hall, clapping louder than anyone else, a deep, overwhelming wave of pride swelling in his chest.
