Chapter 26 - The Architecture of PeaceTwo years after the night Detective Gallo tried to raid their home, the coastal town of Bar Harbor had fully integrated the Vascari family into its tight-knit community.

Roman was no longer just a shift supervisor at the timber mill; he had been promoted to plant manager, respected by his workers not for fear or intimidation, but for his fairness, work ethic, and sharp mind.

Celeste’s bookstore and legal advisory clinic had expanded, occupying a charming brick building near the harbor. She was known throughout Hancock County as a fierce advocate for families and small business owners—a woman whose brilliant legal mind could solve almost any puzzle thrown her way.

And little Maya, now five years old, spent her weekends running barefoot along the rocky shore, collecting seashells and chasing seagulls under the watchful eyes of both her parents.

On a bright, crisp Saturday morning in June, Roman and Celeste sat on the front porch of their cliffside home, drinking coffee while watching Maya play in the garden.

"You know," Celeste said, breaking the peaceful silence as she leaned her head against Roman’s shoulder, "the local historical society sent me a letter yesterday."

Roman chuckled, wrapping an arm around her. "What did they want? To make your bookstore a historical landmark?"

"Close," she smiled. "They want to feature the architectural history of this house. Apparently, it was built in nineteen-twenty by a reclusive ship captain who designed it to withstand hurricane-force winds from every possible angle."

Roman looked around at the weathered grey shingles, the sturdy wrap-around porch, and the solid stone foundation anchored deep into the Maine granite.

"A hurricane-proof house," Roman murmured, a warm, affectionate smile spreading across his face. "Sounds familiar."

Celeste turned her head, looking up at him with those deep, brilliant eyes that had once seen right through every lie he ever told.

"Some structures," she whispered, her voice filled with quiet triumph, "are just built to weather any storm."

May you like

Roman leaned down, pressing his lips softly to hers, tasting the sweet promise of all the years still waiting for them.

"Especially," he replied against her lips, "when you have the right architect."
