Chapter 5 - The Fall of an EmpireWithin forty-eight hours, the Vascari empire collapsed like a house of cards in a hurricane.

Federal agents raided every warehouse, shipping terminal, and front business associated with Roman’s name. Without the offshore accounts to pay off local police, judges, and syndicate captains, loyalty dissolved overnight. Men who had kissed Roman’s ring now rushed to cut deals with federal prosecutors, offering up every detail of his operations in exchange for immunity.

Marco Bellini stayed loyal until the end—not out of affection, but out of professional survival.

"They’ve frozen the personal accounts, Boss," Marco reported, standing in the middle of the ransacked penthouse while federal investigators cataloged downstairs. "We have twenty-four hours before they seize the property. Every asset, every car, every piece of real estate is gone."

Roman sat in the leather armchair by the window, a glass of bourbon in his hand. He hadn't shaved in three days. For the first time in his life, he looked like a mortal man.

"Let them take it," Roman said quietly, staring out at the grey Chicago river.

"What are you going to do?" Marco asked, genuinely bewildered. "You’re Roman Vascari. You can start over in Vegas, in Zurich, in—"

"No," Roman interrupted, setting the glass down. "I spent twenty years building a fortress out of fear, Marco. And the moment I needed it to hold the only person I ever truly cared about, it crumbled because there was no foundation underneath it."

Marco stared at him, unsure if his boss had finally lost his mind. "So what's the play?"

Roman stood up, buttoning his suit jacket with a quiet, resolute calm. He reached into his inner pocket and pulled out a simple, unlined envelope that Celeste had left on his desk during her final exit.

He hadn't opened it until now.

Inside was a single handwritten address in a small coastal town in Maine, along with a key and a short note:

“If you want to try being a father instead of a boss, the door is unlocked. But you leave the gun behind.”

Roman looked down at the heavy Sig Sauer pistol resting on the desk. He picked it up, popped the magazine out, cleared the chamber, and tossed it into the metal wastebasket.

"Pack a bag, Marco," Roman said, a faint, ghost of a smile touching his lips. "We're taking a road trip."
