Chapter 16 - The Truth About the Millers

"What are you talking about?" I asked, my hands trembling as I kept my distance from the porch steps.
Elena stepped down into the tall grass, her cold, dark eyes locked onto mine with an intensity that made my skin crawl.
"You think I was just an ordinary adoption? A poor baby given away because of financial hardship?" Elena spat out the words like poison. "That’s the lie our mother wrote in her journal to make herself sleep at night. The truth is, I wasn't given away. I was sold."
The word hung in the damp evening air like a physical blow.
"Sold?" I echoed, my voice barely a whisper. "That’s insane. Our parents weren't criminals."
"Weren't they?" Elena sneered, pulling a yellowed, heavy manila folder from beneath her coat and tossing it onto the hood of my car. "Open it. Read the financial ledgers from 1991. Our parents didn't put me up for a closed adoption through an agency—they sold me directly to a private broker in the city for cash up front to pay off gambling debts and fund their lifestyle."
I slowly walked over to the car, my fingers trembling as I opened the folder. Inside were bank transfer receipts, handwritten ledger notes signed by my father, and a notarized cash-advance agreement.
"When I turned eighteen," Elena continued, her voice cracking with suppressed rage, "I spent years tracking down my biological origins. I found out about Maya. I found out about you. And I found out that while I was raised in foster care hell, bouncing from abusive home to abusive home, my precious little sisters were kept, loved, and raised like princesses in the family home."
"Elena, I am so sorry," I said, a wave of profound empathy washing over my fear. "I didn't know. None of this was my fault, or Maya's—we were just kids—"
"It is your fault because you inherited everything!" Elena screamed, stepping closer, her face contorting with fury. "The house, the family inheritance, the love... and most importantly, you got to experience motherhood. You got a daughter named Clara!"
My blood ran cold. "How do you know about Clara?"
Elena let out a dark, triumphant laugh. "Because Maya wasn't the only one who made deals with adoption brokers, Sarah. When Maya got pregnant with David's child, she didn't just talk to one broker—she talked to two. And I was the client waiting on the other end of the contract."
The world stopped spinning.

"What?" I gasped, stumbling backward against the car fender.
"Maya promised me that baby," Elena hissed, her eyes wild and manic. "She took my advance money just like she took the syndicate's money. That baby legally belonged to me under a private pre-birth custody assignment. You and James stole my child!"
