Chapter 5 - Secrets and Lies

The darkness of the backyard seemed to close in around us. The wind rustled through the oak trees, but for a long, agonizing moment, the only sound was the heavy, ragged breathing of my husband and my brother.
"How?" I choked out, the betrayal burning in my throat like acid. "How could you sleep with her? You knew what she did to this family! You knew she destroyed our mother, you knew she stole everything she could get her hands on, and you went behind our backs?"
"It wasn't like that, Sarah!" David pleaded, his hands raised defensively as James finally let go of his jacket, stepping back as if touching David was poisoning him.
"Then what was it, David? Enlighten us!" James shouted, kicking a stray lawn chair out of frustration.
David slumped against the fence, sliding down until he was sitting on the grass, burying his face in his hands. "It happened about eight months ago. I ran into her downtown. She looked... she looked awful, Sarah. She was living out of a car, crying, claiming she had gotten clean, begging for help. I was stupid. I took her to a diner, tried to give her some cash, and things... things got complicated. It was one night. Just one stupid, drunken, catastrophic mistake."
"A mistake?" I yelled, tears streaming down my face. "A mistake is forgetting to buy milk! A baby is a human life, David! And you kept it a secret from us?"
"She swore she was going to abort it!" David cried out, looking up at us with desperate, bloodshot eyes. "When she found out she was pregnant a month later, she told me she took care of it. She said she terminated the pregnancy. I believed her! I had nightmares about it for weeks, but I thought it was over. I didn't find out she was carrying it to term until last week when she tracked me down demanding money to disappear."
James let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "And you didn't think to tell us? Your own sister and brother-in-law? You were just going to let her pop out a kid and leave it on a doorstep somewhere?"
"I was going to deal with it!" David shouted back, standing up to face us. "I was trying to get enough money together to put her in a rehab facility out of state so she could safely give the baby up for adoption without dragging our entire family through the mud! I was trying to protect you guys! Especially you, Sarah. I knew how badly you wanted a little girl, and I knew how dangerous the doctors said another pregnancy was for you. The thought of a baby—my baby—being out there while you guys pined away for Clara... it was tearing me apart inside!"
The name Clara hit the cold night air like lightning striking dry brush.
My knees buckled. James caught me before I hit the ground, pulling me tightly against his chest.
"Clara," I whispered, the irony tasting like poison. "You named her Clara?"
May you like
David froze, his eyes widening in horror. "What? No... I didn't name her. Did Maya... did Maya name her Clara?"
"She’s sitting in a pink blanket in the NICU right now," James said coldly, staring daggers at David. "And Child Services gave us two hours to decide whether we are taking her home or letting her go to strangers."
