Chapter 3 - The Ultimatum

Before I could process the surreal nightmare unfolding around us, a brisk, middle-aged woman in a sharp navy-blue suit stepped out of the private consultation office at the end of the hall. She checked a clipboard, scanned the corridor, and locked her eyes directly onto us.

"Are you Mr. and Mrs. Miller?" she asked, her tone professional yet carrying a heavy undertone of exhaustion.

James stepped forward, shielding me slightly. "Yes. I'm James, and this is my wife, Sarah."

"I’m Director Vance from Child Protective Services," she said, extending a hand that neither of us shook. "I’m glad you’re here. We have a very delicate and urgent situation on our hands regarding the infant in Room 104."

"We know Maya is the mother," I blurted out, my protective instincts flaring like a wild brushfire. "And we’ve been told... we’ve been told disturbing allegations about who the father might be. But none of this makes sense. We haven't consented to anything, and quite frankly, we are still processing the shock."

Director Vance nodded slowly, her expression softening just a fraction. "I understand completely, Mrs. Miller. But biology doesn't wait for paperwork to catch up. Under emergency protocols, since the biological mother has formally and legally surrendered all rights, and the alleged paternal family is present, we must establish temporary placement immediately."

She stepped closer, lowering her voice. "The mother, Maya, left a specific note attached to her hospital chart. She stated explicitly: 'Give her to Sarah and James. They always wanted a little girl. If they don't take her, no one else will.' She knew exactly what she was doing."

"Manipulative to the very end," I hissed, wiping a hot tear from my cheek. "She ruins lives and then leaves her wreckage at our doorstep like a package delivery."

"That wreckage is a newborn human being who is currently experiencing mild neonatal withdrawal symptoms," Director Vance stated bluntly, delivering the blow without flinching.

The words hit me like physical punches. Withdrawal? Maya had used drugs while pregnant? My mind flashed to our three boys at home—healthy, bright, and safe. Bringing a substance-exposed infant into our home wasn't just taking in a stray family member; it was inviting an unpredictable storm of medical crises, social services oversight, and a confrontation with my brother David that could destroy whatever was left of our family.

"What about David?" James asked, cutting straight to the core issue. "Have you spoken to my brother-in-law? Has anyone reached out to him?"

"We tried," Director Vance replied, pulling a card from her pocket. "His phone is switched off. But I must inform you—if David Miller is indeed the biological father, he holds legal rights. He can contest placement. Or, he can sign over his custody to you as well. But right now, you have a choice to make before the clock strikes midnight."

She handed us a clipboard with a pen resting on top of a single, terrifyingly crisp piece of paper: Emergency Kinship Placement Agreement.

"You have two hours to decide whether to sign this provisional custody form," Director Vance said. "If you walk away now, Child Services takes custody, and the baby goes into emergency foster care tonight. If you sign, you take her home."
