Chapter 20 - Forever Home

The sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and rose.
The guests had all gone home. The boys were upstairs, exhausted from a full day of cake, games, and racing around the yard, finally fast asleep in their beds.
The house was quiet—the peaceful, warm kind of quiet that only a truly happy home can hold.
I walked into Clara’s bedroom. She was curled up on her side, clutching her stuffed rabbit, fast asleep with a faint smile on her face.
I gently pulled the pink blanket up to her chin, brushing a stray dark curl from her forehead.
"I love you, my little Clara," I whispered softly in the dark.
As I turned to leave the room, I noticed the dusty cardboard box sitting on the top shelf of her closet—the exact box I had pulled down the night we made our midnight decision at the hospital years ago.
I reached up, pulled it down, and opened it one last time.
Inside lay the tiny pink socks, the embroidered blanket with her name stitched in silver thread by my grandmother, and the rattle we had bought before the doctors delivered their terrifying verdict.
I didn't feel sadness when I looked at them anymore. I didn't feel the bitter sting of what we had lost.
I only felt the overwhelming, miraculous grace of what we had found.
James walked into the doorway, leaning against the frame with his hands in his pockets, watching me quietly.
"Everything okay?" he asked softly.
I smiled, closed the box, and set it back on the shelf—not as a reminder of a closed chapter, but as the foundation of our entire world.

"Everything is perfect," I said.
I walked over to him, slipping my hand into his. Together, we turned off the light, closed the door, and walked down the hallway into our happily ever after.
