Chapter 6 - The Midnight Decision

We went back inside. We didn't look at the boys doing their homework; we locked ourselves in our bedroom, turning off the lights so we couldn't see the world outside.

"We can't do it, Sarah," James said quietly, sitting on the edge of the bed with his head in his hands. "Think about what this means. A baby withdrawing from drugs. The social workers breathing down our necks. David in the middle of it all, dragging toxic drama right to our doorstep. Our boys... they deserve a peaceful home. We protected our family for years. If we take this child, we are inviting chaos back in."

I walked over to the closet, reaching up to the very top shelf where a dusty, cardboard box had sat untouched for nearly five years.

I pulled it down, setting it gently on the bed between us.

Inside were the tiny pink socks, the embroidered blanket with the name Clara stitched in silver thread by my grandmother, the newborn onesies, and the rattle we had bought before the doctors delivered their terrifying verdict.

I opened the blanket, holding up a tiny sleeper. It smelled faintly of lavender and old storage dust.

"When the doctor told me another pregnancy would kill me," I whispered, looking straight into James’s eyes, "I cried for months because I believed I was being robbed of my daughter. I believed the universe had cheated me."

"Sarah..." James started, his voice cracking.

"And now, the universe drops my niece—my own blood, carrying the exact name we dreamed of—into a hospital room two miles away," I continued, tears falling freely onto the fabric. "She didn't ask to be born to Maya. She didn't ask for a drug-addicted mother or a terrified father. She’s innocent, James. Just like our boys."

James reached out, his thumb gently brushing a tear from my cheek. "And David? How do we live with David coming over every Sunday, knowing he’s the biological father of the little girl we’re raising?"

"We lay down the law," I said fiercely, a sudden, fierce strength rising from the depths of my soul. "David signs over full legal custody to us—sole custody, with zero parental rights. He becomes just Uncle David again, or he walks out of our lives forever. Those are his only two options."

James looked at the box of baby clothes, then up at me. A slow, weary, yet profound smile touched the corners of his mouth.

"You never back down from a fight, do you?" he murmured.

"Never," I replied.

Ten minutes later, my phone buzzed on the nightstand. It was a text message from Director Vance: “Time is running out, Mrs. Miller. What is your decision?”

I looked at James. He nodded once, firmly.

I picked up the phone and typed back four words that would alter our family tree forever: “We are coming in.”
