Chapter 18 - Healing Wounds

The aftermath of Elena’s arrest was swift, clinical, and thorough.
Because of the physical threats, the trespassing, and the documented extortion attempts, a judge issued a permanent, ironclad restraining order preventing Elena from ever coming within a thousand miles of our family. Combined with her prior record and the fraudulent adoption schemes she had attempted to enforce, she was remanded to a psychiatric evaluation facility pending criminal trial.
The ghost of our parents' past was finally laid to rest in the cold pages of old court ledgers and burnt paper.
Three weeks later, on a bright, crisp Sunday morning, our house felt lighter than it had in years. The heavy weight that had hung over our family tree for over a decade had vanished.
Our three boys were out in the front yard playing touch football with James, their laughter ringing out through the autumn air.
I stood at the kitchen sink, washing the breakfast dishes, when I felt a pair of small, soft arms wrap around my legs.
I looked down. Clara stood there looking up at me with her bright, dark eyes, holding up a pink crayon drawing of a stick-figure family.
"Mommy, look. This is you, this is Daddy, this is Leo, Noah, Sam... and this is me," she said proudly, pointing to a tiny figure in the corner with a massive pink bow on its head.
I dried my hands on a towel, knelt down, and pulled her tightly into my arms, burying my face in her curly hair.
"It’s the most beautiful picture I've ever seen, sweet girl," I whispered, fighting back tears of absolute, profound gratitude.
James walked in through the back patio door, flushed and smiling, holding a football under one arm. He walked over, knelt beside us, and wrapped both of us in his arms.
"Everything is quiet," James murmured, kissing my temple. "No more ghosts. No more secrets. Just us."
May you like
"Just us," I agreed, looking out the window at the golden sunlight flooding our yard.
We had survived the hospital call on an ordinary Tuesday. We had survived Maya, David, the syndicate, and Elena. We had fought for our family, and we had won.
