CHAPTER 2 — The Letters That Were Never Meant To Be Found
The next morning, Christmas Eve arrived with fresh snow and bitter winds.
Emma hid the letters back inside the wooden box before Lily woke up.
She thought the secret was safe.
She was wrong.
While looking for Christmas decorations in the storage closet, Lily accidentally discovered the old box.
Inside were dozens of envelopes.
Every one of them had her name.
Curiosity defeated fear.
She opened the first letter.
"Dear Lily,
If you're reading this, it means I finally found a way back to you..."
Her tiny hands began to shake.
There were birthday letters.
Christmas letters.
Letters for her first day of school.
Letters for every year she had been alive.
Her father had written to her every single Christmas.
He had never forgotten.
Tears rolled down her cheeks as she whispered,
"Mom... you said Daddy left us."
Emma froze in the doorway.
She had imagined this moment for years.
But she was never prepared for the pain in her daughter's eyes.
"I can explain," Emma begged.
Before she could say another word, someone knocked on the apartment door.
Three sharp knocks.
Emma slowly opened it.
Standing outside was an older man wearing an expensive black coat.
"I've been looking for Lily Carter," he said quietly.
"My name is Robert Hayes."
"I was your father's lawyer."
Emma's face turned completely pale.
"He told me to deliver this only if he never came back."
Robert handed Lily a sealed envelope and a small silver key.
Inside the envelope was one sentence that changed the little girl's world forever.
"Your father never abandoned you... he was protecting you from someone much closer than you think."
Emma collapsed into a chair.
Lily slowly turned toward her mother.
For the first time in her life...
She realized the biggest lie had never come from the father who disappeared.
It came from the mother she trusted most.
