CHAPTER 4 — The Man Who Came Back From the Dead

The lights inside the vault flickered.

Emma grabbed Lily and pulled her close.

Robert rushed to the door, but it was locked from the outside.

Then a hidden speaker crackled.

“Hello, Emma.”

Emma stopped breathing.

She knew that voice.

Lily looked up, confused. “Mommy… who is that?”

The speaker crackled again.

“You told my daughter I abandoned her. You hid my letters. You let her cry every Christmas.”

Lily’s eyes widened.

“Daddy?”

The vault camera turned toward her.

Then the screen on the wall came alive.

Daniel Carter appeared.

Older. Scarred. Alive.

Emma screamed, “No… you’re dead.”

Daniel’s face hardened.

“No. You made everyone believe I was.”

Robert slowly turned to Emma.

“You told the court Daniel died overseas.”

Emma backed away, shaking her head.

“I did it to protect Lily!”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“No. You did it to protect yourself.”

Then another video opened on the screen.

It showed Emma meeting secretly with Daniel’s business partner the night before he disappeared.

Lily stepped away from her mother.

Emma reached for her. “Baby, please—”

But Lily whispered,

“Don’t call me that.”

Daniel looked at his daughter through the screen, tears in his eyes.

“Lily, I’m coming home tonight.”

But before anyone could speak, Emma pulled a second key from her coat pocket.

Her mother had always known how to open the box.
