CHAPTER 3 — The Box Beneath the Bank

Lily held the silver key like it was something alive.

Emma tried to take it from her, but Robert stepped between them.

“No,” he said firmly. “Daniel wanted Lily to have this.”

Emma’s eyes filled with panic.

“She’s a child. She doesn’t understand.”

Robert looked at her coldly.

“She understands enough to know she was lied to.”

Two hours later, Lily stood inside a private bank vault, her small hand wrapped around Robert’s sleeve. Emma followed behind, trembling with every step.

The key opened Box 417.

Inside was no jewelry.

No cash.

Only one old phone, a flash drive, and a video message labeled:

FOR MY DAUGHTER.

Robert pressed play.

Daniel’s face appeared on the screen. He looked exhausted, thinner than in every photo Lily had ever seen.

“My sweet Lily,” he said, voice shaking, “if you are watching this, then something happened to me.”

Lily covered her mouth.

Daniel continued.

“I did not leave you. I was forced to disappear because I discovered someone was stealing from my company… someone who knew your mother.”

Emma whispered, “Turn it off.”

But Robert didn’t stop.

Daniel looked straight into the camera.

“And if I’m gone, the person who betrayed me is probably still standing beside you.”

Lily slowly turned toward her mother.

Then the vault door slammed shut behind them.

And from the hallway, a man’s voice said,

“Finally. The little girl found the key.”
