CHAPTER 5 — The Mother Everyone Believed... Until Tonight
Emma fell to her knees.
Tears streamed down her face as Lily stepped farther away, clutching the silver key against her chest.
"You lied to me..." Lily whispered.
Emma reached out with trembling hands.
"I lied because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive."
Daniel's image remained on the screen.
"No, Emma. Tell her the whole truth."
Robert inserted the flash drive into the bank's secure computer.
A folder appeared.
CONFIDENTIAL — PROJECT PHOENIX
Hundreds of financial records filled the screen.
Millions of dollars had disappeared from Daniel's company over six years.
Every transfer led to one name.
Michael Ross.
Daniel's former business partner.
The same man Emma had secretly met before Daniel vanished.
Emma shook her head violently.
"You don't understand! Michael kidnapped Daniel! He threatened to kill Lily if I ever told the police he was alive."
Lily stared at her mother in disbelief.
"You... were trying to save me?"
Emma nodded through her tears.
"I received videos of your father being tortured. Every time I tried to fight back, Michael sent another warning."
Robert froze.
"I investigated Michael for years... but I never knew he used Lily as leverage."
Suddenly, every monitor inside the vault went black.
Then one sentence appeared in bright red letters.
YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT THE BOX CLOSED.
The lights shut off.
Someone unlocked the vault from the outside.
Slow... deliberate... footsteps echoed toward them.
A familiar voice laughed.
"Six years... and you're still too late."
Michael Ross walked into the room.
Behind him stood four armed men.
