CHAPTER 1 — The Baby She Couldn't Stop Crying Over

The cabin had barely reached cruising altitude when the baby's cries shattered the silence.

Passengers sighed in frustration.

Some rolled their eyes.

Others reached for their headphones.

In the middle of the aisle stood a young woman named Emily, her arms trembling as she desperately rocked the tiny infant wrapped in a faded white blanket. Tears streamed down her face as she whispered over and over,

"Please... just a little longer... please don't cry..."

A flight attendant approached with sympathy.

"Ma'am, would you like me to help?"

Emily forced a weak smile.

"No... thank you. He's all I have."

A businessman sitting in seat 14C glanced up from his laptop. His name was Daniel Carter, CEO of one of New York's fastest-growing investment firms. Normally he hated noisy flights.

But something about the woman's terrified expression stopped him.

She didn't look exhausted.

She looked hunted.

As Emily continued pacing, the baby suddenly became pale and struggled to breathe.

Panic spread across her face.

"Oh my God... Noah... stay with me..."

Passengers began murmuring.

"Does anyone know CPR?"

"Call for a doctor!"

Daniel stood immediately.

"I'm trained in emergency response."

Emily hesitated only a second before placing the baby into his arms.

The moment Daniel pulled back the worn blanket...

His face turned completely white.

There, stitched into one corner with fading blue thread, were two tiny initials.

D.C.

Daniel's hands began shaking.

Only one blanket in the entire world carried those initials.

His late wife had embroidered it herself...

For the son that had supposedly died five years earlier.

Daniel stared at the baby.

His breathing became uneven.

"Where... did you get this blanket?"

Emily froze.

Fear flooded her eyes.

"I... I can't tell you."

Daniel's voice became cold.

"You have exactly ten seconds before this plane lands with federal agents waiting."

Emily whispered something so quietly only Daniel could hear.

"I didn't steal him..."

"...I saved him."

And at that exact moment...

May you like

Someone in the back of the aircraft quietly lifted a phone and texted only four words.

He's found the child.
