CHAPTER 1 — The Job Nobody Wanted

Emily Carter never imagined that the hardest decision of her life would begin with a phone call from a private hospital.

At twenty-four, she had already buried her mother.

Cancer had drained every dollar the family owned.

The hospital bills remained.

Debt collectors called every day.

Her younger brother, Noah, had just received a scholarship to medical school, but without tuition money he would lose everything they had sacrificed for.

Emily worked double shifts at a public hospital, surviving on coffee and four hours of sleep.

Still, it wasn't enough.

Then came an offer so unbelievable that everyone warned her to refuse.

Private nursing.

One patient.

One million dollars per year.

The condition?

No vacations.

No personal visitors.

No questions.

And one warning...

"Most nurses quit before the first week."

The patient was Alexander Blackwood.

Forty years old.

Founder of Blackwood Technologies.

One of the richest men in America.

Two years earlier his private helicopter had crashed into the mountains during a business trip.

Officially...

Only Alexander survived.

But he never woke up.

Doctors called it an irreversible coma.

The media called him "The Sleeping Billionaire."

His younger cousin, Damien Blackwood, immediately became acting CEO.

Within months, Damien sold several company divisions, replaced Alexander's loyal executives, and quietly gained complete control of the empire.

Nobody questioned it.

After all...

Alexander would never return.

Emily arrived at the Blackwood Medical Estate just before sunrise.

It wasn't really a hospital.

It looked more like a luxury mansion disguised as one.

Marble floors.

Crystal chandeliers.

Private security armed with military weapons.

Every hallway covered with cameras.

She immediately felt she wasn't entering a place of healing.

She was entering a prison.

The chief physician, Dr. Warren, barely looked at her.

"Your only responsibility is keeping him alive."

"No unnecessary conversations."

"No visitors."

"No touching anything except medical equipment."

"And never ask about his family."

His cold voice made Emily uncomfortable.

But she simply nodded.

She needed the money.

When she finally entered Room 101...

Everything became silent.

Alexander lay perfectly still.

His face looked peaceful.

Too peaceful.

He didn't resemble someone dying.

He looked like someone trapped.

Machines quietly beeped beside him.

His breathing remained perfectly steady.

There wasn't a single scar visible except one small mark behind his left ear.

Emily stared longer than she intended.

Something about him didn't feel right.

Days became weeks.

Emily followed the same routine.

Changing IV bags.

Checking blood pressure.

Massaging muscles to prevent atrophy.

Changing clothes.

Feeding through tubes.

Turning him every two hours.

Cleaning every inch of his body with absolute dignity.

Unlike many nurses before her...

She talked to him.

"Today it rained."

"My little brother passed another exam."

"I burned dinner again."

She laughed at herself.

There was never an answer.

But somehow...

Talking made the room feel alive.

One afternoon she noticed something strange.

While discussing Noah's future...

Alexander's heart monitor suddenly increased.

Only for three seconds.

Then it returned to normal.

Emily frowned.

Coincidence?

She repeated the story the next day.

Again...

His heartbeat rose.

Exactly when she mentioned hope.

Dr. Warren dismissed it immediately.

"Random electrical activity."

"Ignore it."

But Emily couldn't.

Because she had cared for coma patients before.

This...

Didn't feel random.

That night...

As she left the room...

She could have sworn...

One finger had moved.

Just slightly.

Almost invisible.

When she rushed back...

It was perfectly still.

Had exhaustion made her imagine it?

She wasn't sure.

But for the first time...

Emily wondered if Alexander could hear everything.

She had no idea...

Someone watching through the hidden security cameras had noticed her reaction.

And somewhere inside the mansion...

Damien Blackwood smiled coldly.

"Keep watching the new nurse."

"If she gets too curious..."

"We'll replace her."

Emily had unknowingly stepped into a war worth billions of dollars.

And she was about to become its next target.
