CHAPTER 7 — The Shot in the Dark

The gunshot echoed through the Blackwood Medical Estate.

For one terrifying second, nobody moved.

The emergency lights flickered to life, bathing the hallway in an eerie red glow.

Emily instinctively threw herself over Alexander's bed.

Federal agents drew their weapons.

"Nobody move!"

When the lights fully returned...

Dr. Warren was lying on the floor.

A bullet had pierced his shoulder.

He was alive—but screaming in agony.

Damien Blackwood was gone.

"So is the suspect!" an agent shouted.

Every exit was immediately sealed.

Security footage was pulled up.

But as technicians reviewed the cameras, their faces turned pale.

Every recording from the previous ten minutes had been erased.

Someone inside the security system had helped Damien escape.

"There has to be another traitor," the lead investigator muttered.

Meanwhile, Alexander struggled to breathe.

After more than two years trapped inside his own body, every muscle felt like stone.

Emily gently squeezed his hand.

"You don't have to speak."

But Alexander slowly shook his head.

His lips trembled.

"I... remember... everything."

The room fell silent.

"I heard every conversation."

"Every meeting."

"Every lie."

His eyes filled with tears.

"They knew I was conscious."

"They laughed... while poisoning me."

Even seasoned investigators looked shaken.

Alexander wasn't just a victim.

He was the only living witness to two years of crimes.

Hours later, Dr. Warren finally broke.

Facing attempted murder charges and overwhelming evidence, he asked for a deal.

"I'll tell you everything."

He confessed that Damien had paid him millions of dollars to keep Alexander in a chemically induced state.

The helicopter crash had not been an accident.

Damien had bribed the maintenance company to sabotage the aircraft before the flight.

When Alexander survived, Damien refused to let him wake.

Over the next two years, dozens of people had accepted bribes to remain silent.

Doctors.

Lawyers.

Executives.

Even members of the Blackwood family.

It was bigger than anyone imagined.

But before Dr. Warren could reveal every name...

His heart monitor suddenly screamed.

He began choking violently.

Doctors rushed toward him.

Too late.

Within seconds...

He was dead.

The toxicology team later found traces of cyanide hidden inside one of his emergency medications.

Someone had silenced him forever.

And that meant the conspiracy was still alive.
