CHAPTER 10 — The Final Trap

Emily's heart nearly stopped.
Across the street, beneath the flickering glow of a broken streetlamp, Damien Blackwood stood perfectly still.
He wasn't hiding.
He wanted her to see him.
Then...
He smiled.
A slow, chilling smile.
And disappeared into the darkness.
"He's here!" Emily shouted.
Federal agents rushed outside.
Police cars surrounded the block within minutes.
Helicopters circled overhead.
Search dogs swept every alley.
But Damien had vanished as if he had never been there.
The only thing investigators found was a small black envelope lying on the sidewalk.
Inside was a single handwritten sentence.
"The game ends where it began."
Alexander stared at the note.
"I know exactly where he's going."
Two hours later, a convoy of federal vehicles climbed the winding mountain road toward the crash site where Alexander's helicopter had gone down more than two years earlier.
The wreckage had long since been removed, but the abandoned helipad remained.
Rain poured from the sky.
Thunder rolled across the mountains.
As the agents spread out...
A voice echoed through the darkness.
"You finally made it."
Damien stepped from an old hangar holding a remote detonator.
Around him were dozens of fuel barrels connected by wires.
"You've taken everything from me," Damien said calmly.
Alexander stepped forward despite Emily trying to stop him.
"No."
"You took everything from yourself."
Damien laughed.
"I built this empire."
Alexander shook his head.
"You stole it."
Damien pressed a button.
A countdown appeared on the detonator.
05:00
Five minutes.
The entire hangar had been rigged to explode.
Panic erupted.
Agents searched desperately for the explosives.
Bomb technicians raced inside.
Emily noticed something everyone else missed.
A thin cable disappeared beneath the old concrete floor.
She followed it through the rain.
It led behind a rusted generator.
Hidden there was the main detonator.
Without thinking, she pulled the emergency disconnect lever.
Nothing happened.
The countdown continued.
02:17
"It's on a backup battery!" a bomb technician shouted.
"There isn't enough time!"
Damien laughed louder.
"If I can't own Blackwood Technologies..."
"No one will."
He slowly raised a pistol toward Alexander.
Before he could pull the trigger—
Bang!
Another shot rang out.
Damien's weapon flew from his hand.
Everyone turned.
Standing behind a police vehicle was Martha—the elderly housekeeper everyone had ignored for years.
Holding a service pistol with steady hands.
One federal agent stared in disbelief.
"Martha..."
"How did you make that shot?"
She smiled faintly.
"I wasn't always a housekeeper."
She reached into her pocket and revealed an old identification badge.
Years before working for the Blackwood family...
Martha had been an FBI special agent assigned to organized crime.
After retirement, Alexander's father had hired her to quietly watch over the family.
She had remained in the mansion for decades...
Waiting for the day the truth finally surfaced.
Damien tried to run.
He slipped on the rain-soaked rocks near the cliff's edge.
Alexander reached out instinctively.
"Take my hand!"
For a brief second...
Damien looked at the cousin whose life he had stolen.
Then he laughed bitterly.
"You'd still save me?"
Alexander answered quietly.
"I'm not you."
Damien looked down into the darkness below.
Then released his grip.
He disappeared over the cliff.
The detonator slipped from his hand and shattered against the rocks.
Bomb technicians immediately disabled the remaining explosives with only seconds left on the timer.
The mountain fell silent.
Six Months Later
Alexander made a remarkable recovery.
Months of therapy allowed him to walk again, though he still carried a slight limp.
His first decision as CEO shocked Wall Street.
He donated nearly half of his personal fortune to establish the Blackwood Foundation, providing free long-term medical care for coma patients and financial assistance to families burdened by impossible hospital bills.
When reporters asked why, Alexander smiled.
"Because one nurse refused to believe I was already gone."
Emily's student loans were erased anonymously.
Her brother Noah graduated from medical school with honors.
Soon afterward, Alexander offered Emily a position as Director of Patient Advocacy for the Foundation.
She accepted—but only after making him promise one thing.
"No private hospital should ever become someone's prison again."
He kept that promise.
Months later, investigators officially closed the Blackwood case.
More than thirty people were convicted for conspiracy, corruption, attempted murder, and medical fraud.
It became one of the largest healthcare corruption scandals in American history.
As for Martha...
She quietly retired to a small lakeside cabin.
She never gave a television interview.
Never accepted any award.
When Emily visited her one last time, she asked the question that had been bothering her for months.
"Why did you risk your life for Alexander?"
Martha looked toward the sunset and smiled.
"Because years ago, when nobody knew my name and I had nothing left..."
"...his father saved mine."
Sometimes, the greatest debts aren't paid with money.
They're repaid with courage.
And sometimes...
All it takes to expose a billion-dollar conspiracy...
