CHAPTER 4 — “The Mother-in-Law’s Last Secret.”

Margaret Carter had spent thirty years teaching her son one lesson:
Never lose power.
But now, standing in the middle of Carter Global’s lobby, she looked powerless for the first time.
Daniel turned to his mother.
“You said Evelyn knew nothing.”
Margaret’s face hardened.
“She was supposed to know nothing.”
Evelyn walked into the lobby in person.
The crowd parted for her.
Every step was quiet.
Controlled.
Deadly.
She stopped in front of Margaret.
“You always thought I was just your son’s obedient wife.”
Margaret smiled bitterly.
“You were nothing before this family.”
Evelyn leaned closer.
“No, Margaret.”
“I was the reason this family still existed.”
Then Evelyn handed a folder to security.
Inside were old bank records, secret transfers, and medical documents from years ago.
Margaret’s confident expression vanished.
Daniel looked confused.
“What is that?”
Evelyn turned to him.
“The truth your mother buried before our wedding.”
Daniel snatched the first page.
His hands began to shake.
It was an adoption certificate.
His name was on it.
Daniel Carter.
Adopted.
Margaret screamed,
“Don’t read that!”
But it was too late.
Daniel looked at her in horror.
“I’m not your real son?”
Margaret’s eyes filled with panic.
“You were mine because I raised you!”
Evelyn’s voice cut through the chaos.
“She adopted you only because my father required a male heir to keep part of the Carter legacy alive.”
Daniel’s world collapsed.
“But… why didn’t anyone tell me?”
Evelyn looked almost sad.
“Because Margaret used you.”
“She raised you to chase a throne that was never yours.”
Daniel turned toward his mother, broken.
“You made me destroy my marriage for a company I never owned?”
Margaret shook her head desperately.
“I did it for us!”
“No,” Evelyn said.
“You did it for yourself.”
Then the police entered the lobby.
Margaret stepped back.
Evelyn handed them the final document.
“Margaret Carter, you are under investigation for fraud, coercion, and conspiracy against the Carter trust.”
Margaret’s scream echoed through the marble hall.
Daniel stood frozen as his mother was taken away.
Amelia lowered her eyes.
The fake empire had fallen.
But just when everyone thought Evelyn had won…
Daniel whispered one sentence that changed everything:
“Evelyn…”
“If I was adopted…”
“Then who is my real mother?”
Evelyn’s face finally changed.
Because she knew the answer.
May you like
And it was someone standing inside that building.
