CHAPTER 5 — “The Janitor Who Never Stopped Watching.”

Daniel couldn't breathe.
The question echoed through the silent lobby.
"If Margaret isn't my real mother..."
"...then who is?"
No one moved.
No one spoke.
Then Evelyn slowly turned toward the back of the building.
"Mrs. Helen..."
"You don't have to hide anymore."
Everyone looked toward the elderly janitor quietly pushing a cleaning cart near the elevators.
She wore faded blue overalls.
Gray hair tucked beneath a worn cap.
Her hands trembled as she lowered the mop.
Employees frowned.
They had seen her every day for nearly twenty years.
No one even knew her last name.
Margaret's face suddenly lost all color.
"No..."
"No, she can't be here."
Helen slowly removed her work gloves.
Tears filled her tired eyes.
Daniel stared at her, confused.
"I know you..."
"You've always smiled at me."
Helen nodded softly.
"Every birthday."
"Every Christmas."
"Every promotion."
"I was there."
Daniel frowned.
"Why?"
Helen reached into the pocket of her old uniform.
She pulled out a tiny silver baby bracelet.
The name engraved on it made Daniel's knees buckle.
DANIEL.
His date of birth.
His hospital ID number.
Impossible.
Daniel whispered,
"Where did you get that?"
Helen broke into tears.
"Because I never took it off you."
The lobby exploded with whispers.
Margaret screamed,
"She's lying!"
But Evelyn quietly handed Daniel another document.
Hospital records.
Birth certificates.
DNA reports.
Every page confirmed the same truth.
Helen Matthews...
was Daniel's biological mother.
Daniel looked at Helen in disbelief.
"My whole life..."
"You were here?"
Helen nodded.
"I begged Margaret not to take you."
"I was young."
"I was poor."
"I worked as a nurse in your grandfather's private clinic."
"After your father died..."
Margaret offered to 'help' me."
Instead...
she forged adoption papers.
Paid corrupt officials.
And erased me from your life.
Daniel's hands shook uncontrollably.
Margaret fell to her knees.
"I did what I had to do!"
"I gave you a better future!"
Helen looked at her with quiet pain.
"You didn't give him a future."
"You stole mine."
The entire lobby stood frozen.
But Evelyn wasn't finished.
May you like
She opened one final envelope.
"This isn't the worst thing Margaret hid."
