Chapter 3 - The Sheriff's Arrival

I slowly turned back around on the balcony. "You wouldn't dare."
"Try me!" Juliette cackled maliciously. Her daughter Chloe stepped up beside her, already pulling out her phone camera to record. "A mother-in-law locked out in the heat by a crazy, unhinged wife who locked her own husband out of his home? Oh, the internet is going to love this video, Annie. We'll destroy your architectural firm before the sun goes down."
"Go ahead," I said calmly. "Call them."
Twenty minutes later, two white-and-gold Sheriff's department cruisers pulled up the gravel driveway, their blue lights flashing against the oak trees. Deputy Miller and Sheriff Thomas—a veteran officer who had known my late grandfather for thirty years—stepped out onto the lawn.
Juliette practically fell over herself sprinting toward the officers, tears magically welling up in her eyes in an award-winning performance.
"Sheriff! Thank God you're here!" Juliette sobbed, clutching her designer purse to her chest. "My daughter-in-law has suffered some kind of mental breakdown! She’s locked my family out in the sweltering heat, denied us water, chained up the cooking facilities, and she’s holding my son's children hostage inside that building!"
Sheriff Thomas adjusted his hat, looking over at Mark, who was standing nervously by the padlocked grill, then up at me as I casually walked down the front steps of the house, holding a folder of legal documents and a tray of iced tea for the officers.
"Afternoon, Annie," Sheriff Thomas said politely, taking a glass of iced tea. "Care to explain what's happening here? We got a emergency call about an unlawful imprisonment and domestic disturbance."
"Good afternoon, Sheriff," I replied smoothly. "There is no emergency. My children are inside watching movies in an air-conditioned room, eating lunch I prepared for them. The individuals on my lawn are uninvited trespassers who were asked to leave my private property over half an hour ago."
"Trespassers?!" Juliette shrieked. "This is my son's house!"
"Sheriff," I said, handing him a blue folder. "Here is the title deed to Freedom Ridge Estate. As you can see, the property is held under a Private Land Trust established by my late grandfather, Samuel Vance. I am the sole trustee and legal owner. My husband, Mark, has a residency privilege, but he holds zero ownership equity. I have officially served Mark with a Notice of Legal Separation as of two hours ago via my attorney, which temporarily revokes guest invitation rights for his non-resident relatives."
Sheriff Thomas opened the folder, scanned the legal documents, and slowly nodded. He turned his gaze toward Mark. "Is this correct, Mark? You don't own the deed?"
Mark looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him whole. "I... well... we're married, Sheriff..."
"Marriage doesn't overwrite a pre-existing land trust, son," Sheriff Thomas said bluntly. He turned to Juliette, his demeanor turning cold. "Ma'am, you dialed 911 for a non-emergency civil dispute and made false allegations about hostage situations. That is a misdemeanor offense."
Juliette's face turned white. "What?! You're taking her side? Look at my grandchildren! They are suffering!"
"Your grandchildren are running around on private property that you were asked to vacate," Deputy Miller interjected, pointing toward the tire tracks in my rose bushes. "And frankly, ma'am, driving over flower beds isn't helping your case."
"This is outrageous!" Chloe screamed, waving her phone in Sheriff Thomas's face. "I am streaming this live on Facebook! Thousands of people are watching you protect this crazy woman!"
Sheriff Thomas didn't even blink. He looked directly into Chloe's phone camera. "Good afternoon, internet viewers. Please be advised that trespassing on private agricultural property in this county carries a mandatory $1,000 fine and up to 30 days in county jail. Ma'am, turn off that camera and put your phone away, or I will cite you for interfering with a law enforcement officer."
Chloe gasped and immediately lowered her phone.
"Now," Sheriff Thomas said, turning back to Juliette and her daughters. "You have fifteen minutes to pack your bags, put your children in your vehicles, and drive off this property. If you are still past that gate at 6:15 PM, I will personally arrest every adult here for Criminal Trespass."
Juliette stared at the Sheriff in absolute horror. The grand illusion of her absolute dominance over my life had shattered in front of her family, her daughters, and hundreds of people watching Chloe's live stream.
"Mark!" Juliette screamed, turning on her son with terrifying fury. "Do something! Are you a man or a dog?! Tell your wife to stop this!"
Mark stood there, frozen between the woman who raised him by manipulation and the woman who had spent seven years keeping his life together.
"Mom..." Mark stammered, his voice breaking. "We... we have to leave. She's not joking."
"You coward!" Juliette spat, slapped Mark across the face with a loud, echoey CRACK that made even the deputies wince. "You pathetic, weak coward!"
She spun around, her heels stomping into the dirt. "Girls! Get the kids in the cars! We are leaving this dump!"

As Juliette stormed toward her SUV, she cast one final, dark look back at me. "This isn't over, Annie. You destroyed my family today. I will make sure you burn for this."
"I’ll leave the grill locked for you," I called out with a sweet, mocking wave.
