Chapter 6 - The Ghost of the Estate

My heart hammered against my ribs as I stepped off the porch. Julian Vance—my father’s younger brother—was a man who had been wiped from our family history. Eight years ago, he had been caught attempting to liquidate my grandfather’s real estate holdings through shell companies. When my grandfather caught him, Samuel Vance completely disinherited Julian, legally binding the entire Freedom Ridge Estate into the private trust that was handed directly to me upon my grandfather's passing.
What I had never known—until this precise, terrible moment—was that before Julian was disinherited, he had been secretly married to Juliette for two short, chaotic years in another state before she ever met Mark’s father.
Julian straightened his tailored suit, his silvering hair slicked back, offering a sinister, razor-thin smile.
"Hello, little Annie," Julian said, his voice smooth as oil. "You've certainly made a name for yourself on the internet today."
"What are you doing here, Julian?" I demanded, keeping my distance. "You were legally barred from setting foot on Freedom Ridge land five years ago."
"Ah, but that was under the old trust provisions," Julian chuckled, tapping the legal folder in his hand. "You see, Annie... when your sweet mother-in-law, Juliette, realized she was losing her grip on Mark and this property, she called the one person who knew the structural flaws in your grandfather’s legal setup. Me."
A cold dread spread through my stomach. "Juliette called you?"
"Of course she did," Julian explained, taking a slow step toward me. "Juliette isn't just your overbearing mother-in-law, Annie. She’s my ex-wife. When she married Mark's father, she kept her secret past with me entirely hidden from Mark. But when you put that locked chain on the grill yesterday, she panicked. She realized her cash cow was dying. So she made a deal with the devil. With me."
He pulled a thick sheaf of legal paper from his folder and held it up.
"When your grandfather Samuel created the Vance Family Trust, he included a tiny, obscure clause on page forty-eight," Julian revealed, his eyes dancing with malicious triumph. "A clause that states if the primary trustee—you—engages in 'acts of gross familial neglect or commercial exploitation of the trust property,' any surviving second-degree blood heir can file for emergency receivership to strip the trustee of their power."
I stared at him in disbelief. "Commercial exploitation?! I locked my own grill!"
"You printed menus, Annie," Julian sneered, holding up a screenshot of my viral menu sheet. "You offered food, lodging, and childcare services for set monetary rates on trust land that is zoned strictly for non-commercial residential use. You effectively turned Freedom Ridge into an illegal, un-permitted commercial resort business on camera, broadcast it to millions of people, and collected financial fees!"
"I didn't take any money!" I shouted. "It was a point to prove a lesson!"
"It doesn't matter if you took a dollar or a million," Julian countered smoothly. "The menu constitutes an explicit offer of commercial enterprise on protected trust land. Juliette signed an affidavit this morning testifying that you attempted to force her and her grandchildren to pay commercial resort rates under duress. Combined with my status as Samuel's surviving blood son, an emergency probate judge signed an injunction two hours ago."

Julian reached out and slapped a bright red legal notice onto my front porch pillar.
"Effective immediately, Annie," Julian announced softly, "you are suspended as Trustee of Freedom Ridge. The property is being placed under court receivership. And as the court-appointed receiver... I am ordering you to vacate these premises by 5:00 PM tomorrow."
