CHAPTER 2 – The Photograph That Changed Everything
Emily quickly hid the photograph beneath her sweater just as the bedroom door opened.
Her uncle forced a smile.
"Couldn't sleep?"
His eyes weren't looking at her.
They were searching the room.
Searching for the box.
"I was just organizing Mom's things," Emily replied.
He stared at her for several long seconds before quietly leaving.
The second the hallway became silent again, Emily locked the door.
She unfolded the yellow envelope.
Inside was a handwritten letter from her mother.
"Emily... if you're reading this, it means I couldn't protect the truth anymore."
"The man in the photograph is not a stranger."
"He's your real father."
Emily felt the blood drain from her face.
No...
That couldn't be possible.
The man who raised her...
The man buried beside her mother...
Wasn't her biological father?
She continued reading with trembling hands.
"Your father didn't abandon us."
"He disappeared because someone in this family betrayed him."
"Never trust your uncle."
Before Emily could read another line...
The lights suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Then—
CRASH!
The bedroom window exploded inward.
A masked figure climbed inside.
Without saying a single word...
He reached for only one thing.
The faded photograph.
Emily ran.
The stranger chased her through the dark hallway while terrified relatives screamed downstairs.
Just before he caught her, the photograph slipped from her hand.
It landed face-up beneath the chandelier.
For the first time...
Everyone in the family saw the mysterious man.
Grandmother collapsed onto the floor.
Her uncle whispered one sentence that froze everyone in place.
"He was never supposed to come back..."
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
When the butler opened it...
A tall man with gray hair stood in the rain.
He looked exactly like the young man in the photograph.
