Chapter 11 - The Inheritance Audit

The quiet rhythm of our restored life was interrupted on a crisp Tuesday morning by a heavy thud against the front porch. I stepped outside to find a thick, official envelope stamped with the seal of the Federal Bankruptcy Court.
Inside was a forensic accounting report detailing the true extent of Brandon and Vanessa’s financial wreckage. Before they had even set foot in my mother’s house, they had accumulated over one hundred thousand dollars in high-interest credit card debt, luxury car loans, and unreported tax liens. They hadn't just moved in because they were facing a temporary rough patch; they were financial fugitives running from creditors who were about to repossess everything they owned.
I carried the stack of papers into the kitchen where Mom was brewing fresh coffee.
"More paperwork from the courts?" she asked gently, pouring a cup and sliding it across the island.
"The final asset liquidation audit," I replied, scanning the summary numbers. "Every hidden bank account Brandon and Vanessa opened using forged signatures has been completely emptied. The court-appointed liquidators found a secret stash of cash they tried to wire offshore just days before the arrest."
Mom shook her head slowly, her expression a mix of pity and disbelief. "Greed is a terrible disease, Chloe. They had good jobs years ago, but they always wanted to live a lifestyle far beyond their means. They traded their family, their integrity, and their freedom for designer clothes and country club memberships."
"And they tried to make you pay the ultimate price for it," I said firmly, reaching across the table to hold her hand. "Well, their luxury chapter is officially closed. The state is auctioning off their seized assets, and the proceeds are being funneled directly back into your retirement fund."

Before Mom could reply, my cell phone buzzed violently against the marble countertop. The caller ID flashed an unknown local number, but the text notification that immediately followed sent a cold jolt through my spine.
‘We need to talk about the remaining offshore accounts, Chloe. Your brother wants to make a deal.’
