Chapter 9 - New Beginnings

Three months later, the estate looked unrecognizable.

The opulent, superficial gold and white decor chosen by Vanessa had been replaced with warm, inviting family heirlooms, cozy textiles, and vibrant green plants that my mother loved. The backyard patio where I had first found her scrubbing on her hands and knees was now fitted with comfortable rocking chairs and blooming flower beds.

Brandon and Vanessa’s trial had been swift and devastating. With irrefutable video evidence, bank records, and expert testimony, the judge had thrown the book at them. Brandon received twelve years without the possibility of parole for fraud, extortion, and elder abuse, while Vanessa received ten years in a state correctional facility. Not a single friend from the country club had shown up to support them; their high-society circle had dropped them like hot coals the moment the scandal hit the local headlines.

My mother’s health had rebounded remarkably. Without the constant stress, the physical abuse, and the exhausting slave labor, the trembling in her hands had disappeared, and color had returned to her cheeks.

Every morning, we sat on the back patio drinking coffee together as the sun rose over the garden, talking about nothing and everything.

One crisp Saturday morning, the doorbell rang.

I walked down the hallway, pulling the door open to find a delivery driver holding a heavy, beautifully wrapped package with a formal notary seal.

"Package for Chloe Nguyen," the driver said.

I signed for it, closed the door, and carried it into the kitchen where Mom was slicing fresh strawberries.

"What's that?" Mom asked curiously, wiping her hands on a floral apron.

"Just final confirmation from the county clerk’s office," I said, using a letter opener to slice through the heavy tape.

I pulled out the crisp, official documents. Stamped across the top in bold red letters was the final legal seal: ESTATE CLEARED AND RETURNED TO SOLE RIGHTFUL OWNER. Attached was a cashier's check representing the total liquidation of Brandon and Vanessa’s hidden assets, redirected straight to my mother’s retirement fund as court-mandated restitution.
